Sports aren’t allowed in our house. Especially not if the doctor has advised a certain someone (I’m not naming names, but let’s just call him a white-haired visitor from Iowa who takes half-credit for creating me) to refrain from watching them — and news — for the sake of his stress levels and heart health.
Also: sports are icky.
Hey, I’ve got nothing against you if you like sports. You’ve got to enjoy whatever it is that you’re wired to enjoy. Some people find great pleasure in reciting ancient Sumerian poetry to roomfuls of other… ancient Sumerian poetry enthusiasts. Others like to climb cloud-covered mountains (or die trying). Still others are happiest when they’re dining on rare foodstuffs from unpronounceable places that can only be paid for by currency that can’t be carried. Me? I dig technology. We’re all geeks about something that makes our hearts race, whether we know — or acknowledge — it or not.
Whenever my Iowan visitor watches sports or news, his heart races at a level that causes his doctor concern. It may indicate that he’s even more of a hardcore geek than me — though our interests don’t always intersect. It’s hard to put a handle on the things that get us truly excited, even when our bodies try and tell us to take it down a notch.
The Surgeon General has determined that being a geek can be hazardous to your health.
