I have owned the coolpix 8800 for several years now.
Very happy with outdoor pictures and indors with flash.
but indoor out of flash range (kids sports) is terrible.
I now use the Movie mode for all indoor sports. My only complaint is the 1 minuit max on the video is not long enough for some of my daughters gymnastic events. I do not own a video camera and hoped the coolpix could do both. Is there a firmware upgrade to extend video time past the 60 second limit ?

Since working as a maintainer in the Photo lab I've had the pleasure of working with the D70, the D1X, the Coolpix 5400, and the 8800. When it came time to make the purchase I was torn between the D70 and the 8800. Their image quality is very much identical. The kicker was weight/bulkiness. Instead of carrying around extra lenses and an overall much bigger D70 I decided the Coolpix 8800 was right for me and have been nothing but impressed. My best experience was sitting 40 rows up at the Dallas Cowboys Thanksgiving day game and having the pictures turn out as if I was on the side line. I was even able to make out faces from the the visitors side. This camera packs quite the punch!

The D70 is worth the extra $$. Plus it is so fast! 1000+ photos on a single charge.

I just got finished with doing some digital camera shopping as well. I didn't see the Coolpix 8800, but during my side by side comparison of things I decided on going with the Coolpix 3200. I'm very happy with it thus far.

Did you consider the D70? It's only a few undred more and seems like quite a bit more camera. I've been checking out the 8800 though as well...
