Newspaper Industry Problems?
The newspaper industry is dying:
- Web pages and emails are 100% recyclable material
- “News” is old by the time it hits newsstands
- People don’t (and won’t) pay to read general news
- Craigslist eats classified ads for breakfast
- Bloggers typically publish out of passion, not payment
- Traditional press misquotes, misquotes, and misquotes
- The Internet doesn’t leave ink on your fingers
- Executives continue to operate as though the Internet wasn’t real
- Printed word is no longer seen as the definitive word
- Marketers no longer understand what they’re selling…

A newspaper come-on Chris Pirillo has this hilarious video of a call he received from a newspaper subscription salesperson for the Seattle Times. “This is better than Google! … It’s a good deal! … It’s a complete newspaper online!” June 17 at 11:26 PM in

[IMG Author Avatar]Okay, you have to admit – this was beyond funny to watch. But in the end, we have to ask ourselves the big question. If all of the newspapers are dying, then how come they still seem to maintain a certain level of ongoing subscribers? Ah, there’s the rub.

This is too hilarious, Chris. The poor woman must’ve thought she was dealing with an absolute idiot. Oh, wait!

Sounds like he was just being a jerk – I work at a newspaper and completely understood everything she said. E-editions have been slow to take off, but they are catching on more and more throughout the country. And, by saying they are better than google, she’s saying you can’t find every story in a newspaper online, through google, or on the newspaper website – newspapers don’t give all of their content away to be indexed on Google.
Newspapers circulations have in fact decreased – where as some are increasing. I don’t think they will go away anytime soon, but they are re-inventing themselves with things like the e-edition, and more robust websites. http://www.newspapernext.org/
