New Features on Geeks

After only about a week of being open, Geeks has grown by leaps and bounds. As of the writing of this post, we have 3481 members. There are 954 forum posts, and a countless number of blogs. There are just over 1,000 videos uploaded… and more than 7,000 photos! Yes, you read that right. You Geeks have uploaded over seven thousand pictures!

We’re having just as much fun tweaking things to make the site better as you are playing around and uploading content. Check out some of the new features, and the ones yet to come:

  • Advanced member search - Use this to find people in your area, who are the same age as you, or even filter out either boys or girls.
  • Leaderboard - Where do you stand on the OMFG board?
  • Cover Flow for Who’s Online (click the “Whos Online” link in the right sidebar). - This will show you all the Geeks currently online, and even show you their profile picture.
  • You can now navigate external sites without leaving Geeks (thanks to AJAX script). Don’t be afraid to click those embedded links. You won’t lose your place on Geeks.
  • ShareThis integration, for easier sharing of content with other Web sites. Add your favorite content to your Flickr page, your MySpace or even to your Facebook account.
  • A way to rate more pieces of content, like blog, group, or forum posts (by stars) has been implemented. If you love a forum or blog post, let the author know by ranking them with five stars.
  • We now have clearer navigation to show you what you can do on the network (see the right sidebar). It’s much easier to find what you’re looking for now, without really having to search.
  • Birthday announcements (age will not show) - Make sure you have your birthdate entered in your profile, so we can wish you a happy birthday!
  • New Profile questions for About Me - Tell us the Geekiest thing you’ve ever done, and fill us in on your interests and hobbies.
  • This Tuesday, we’ll be supporting the iPhone (not all features of Geeks yet).
  • This Tuesday, a New Message Center & Friend request interface.
  • This Tuesday, simplified Main & Profile pages.
  • This Tuesday, removal of Dojo: we’ll be replacing Dojo with the newer, faster JavaScript library called jQuery. This is an under-the-hood improvement that will bring faster load times Geeks.
  • Our first week was wonderful, thanks to every registered Geek out there!
  • Send a personalized network invite to at least one different person every day, if you can, to help keep us growing.
  • There’s now an easter egg on the site, and I’m not going to tell you what it is - and I’m not going to tell you where it is. It is, however, on every page.
  • I’m highlighting a different video podcast of the day, so be sure to add some of your own videos to the mix when you have a chance

Keep up the great work, and keep giving me your ideas, comments and feedback. Remember, Geeks is your site!
