Personally, I think they are all good ideas, especially the southpark one by eD. My own network utilizes mythological creatures or ancient gods and godesses.

One random computer has a pokemon’s name! IDKY.

cool discussion, i have always named my networks, originally using norse gods but more recently venturing down all sorts of avenues

i was using characters names out of wargames the film.

david lightman
jim sting
malvin
WOPR = server ;)
professor falken
jennifer mack

etc etc

but i changed it all over to european royal households!

I use classes of starships from the various Star Trek incarnations… But then I'm a bigger loser than most. At work we have 2 sets of naming conventions. The first one was net-acronyms (ie: LOL the Oracle server, HEHE the web server, etc.), and the second more recent one was Family Guy characters (Stewie being the new intranet server that started it all… we still crack up every time we log into that one…).
It's all about the subtle humor geeks would appreciate.

I am a bit of a lame-o, I just used my last name as my primary machine (Mitchell). Then, when I got a laptop, that became lilmitchell. Then when I got a server, that became bigmitchell. And then I replaced my current desktop with a much more powerful system. Now I'm at monstermitchell. My wife does the same variation but with iostream as her base. Hrm. I like the Transformer names better.

The servers and PC's in my home network are all named after the Simpsons. And yes I am always having issues with 'Bart' I may have to change that one ;-)

Hi Chris,
If you go with the Transformers motif, I think the rule should be that you mod the cases of each machine to reflect the Transformer that it is named after. I would love to see an Optimus Prime mod. :-D

You could go with Southpark characters. Name Ponzi's machine Kenny. Then when her machine crashes, you can yell “you killed Kenny… You bastard!”
