Network Topology Names
Our home network is currently HALLOWEEENTOWN. However, each machine is a G.I. Joe character. Don't ask me how it evolved into that, because I can't honestly remember. I was showing Ponzi how to get to other machines from her own, and she got confused with Xamot and Tomax (even though the scar on one is clearly different from the other). Anyway, we're looking for a new set of names. Ideas that have been tossed out:
- The Muppets
- Smurfs
- Looney Tunes
- Fruits
- Transformers
Okay, so the Transformers suggestion wasn't stated aloud – but I'd certainly love to log into Optimus Prime every morning. What are you using at home – or what would you suggest?
You rely on your computer, and so do your customers. Keep your computers (and theirs!) running in near-perfect condition with the help of Optimize 3.0. Use it to get rid of unnecessary files and junk, clean out your registry, and even streamline boot times.

All of those categories seemed interesting for network and computer names. I have never thought about naming my network different names like that. I am just using boring names like the mac computer 1, 2,3 etc. and pc desk and pclaptop. I know they are boring.
Although reading this post sparked an creative idea and I may get a little creative with the computers and network names.
The Transformers names would also be very cool to do as well.

I vote for picking a movie and then naming each computer after a character.
“Gone With the Wind” is an all time favorite. lol Wouldn't you just love to log into Belle Watkins every morning, babe?

I use names of famous Pacific Northwest explorers: Quadra, Cortez, Cook, Drake, Redonda etc.
Very West Coast thing to do…

option one – Snow White and the Seven Dwarves characters (starting with the dwarves, in order of course)
option two – northwest cascade range mountains, probably from northernmost to southernmost

You could go with Southpark characters. Name Ponzi's machine Kenny. Then when her machine crashes, you can yell “you killed Kenny… You bastard!”

Chris:
Aren't you a collector of the Garbage Pail Kids cards? Or don't those lend themselves to proper network etiquette?

Hi Chris,
If you go with the Transformers motif, I think the rule should be that you mod the cases of each machine to reflect the Transformer that it is named after. I would love to see an Optimus Prime mod. :-D

As the owner of mostlymuppet.com and a user of a muppet-themed network scheme myself, I heartily endorse any Henson creations as computer or network names.

The servers and PC's in my home network are all named after the Simpsons. And yes I am always having issues with 'Bart' I may have to change that one ;-)

I am a bit of a lame-o, I just used my last name as my primary machine (Mitchell). Then, when I got a laptop, that became lilmitchell. Then when I got a server, that became bigmitchell. And then I replaced my current desktop with a much more powerful system. Now I'm at monstermitchell. My wife does the same variation but with iostream as her base. Hrm. I like the Transformer names better.

I use classes of starships from the various Star Trek incarnations… But then I'm a bigger loser than most. At work we have 2 sets of naming conventions. The first one was net-acronyms (ie: LOL the Oracle server, HEHE the web server, etc.), and the second more recent one was Family Guy characters (Stewie being the new intranet server that started it all… we still crack up every time we log into that one…).
It's all about the subtle humor geeks would appreciate.

Personally, I think they are all good ideas, especially the southpark one by eD. My own network utilizes mythological creatures or ancient gods and godesses.
One random computer has a pokemon’s name! IDKY.
