My Parents Were in a Car Accident
Those of you who follow me on Twitter already know that my parents were in a car accident this afternoon on their way down to see my brother’s family (Ben) in Texas. Here’s what we know about it thus far:
- My dad was driving.
- It was a single-car accident, potentially from a skid on gravel / over an embankment.
- Mom was asleep when it happened (in the passenger seat).
- Airbags deployed, while the car was totaled.
- Dad believes he may have nodded / spaced off.
- They were helicoptered to St. Lukes in Kansas City.
- Mom has black eyes, scrapes and bruises - stitches near elbow.
- Mom may have a concussion - was dizzy, nauseous this evening.
- Dad has a bruised brain, bruised lungs, in ICU tonight for monitoring.
- Dad’s left ear has been torn from behind, will need plastic surgery.
My brother (Adam) and our Aunt Grace both drove down to KC from Des Moines this evening to be with them over the next couple of days. There’s nothing else to report at the moment, other than to say that my parents are VERY lucky to have survived. Really, there’s little chance of it getting worse than it already is - no broken bones, but a bunch of bad bruises.
No need to send flowers or anything; my brother said it’s not even worth it for me to fly out there since he’s with ‘em. I don’t know how many of you know my parents, but - they’re fine they’ll be fine.

Hey Chris, You don’t know me. I follow you on Twitter. But are actual friends (not virtual friends) with a pal of mine in Los Angeles.
It’s weird: at Maker Faire I overheard about a guy whose parents had a terrible accident, too. And now you.
My deepest, heartfelt prayers for you. I don’t know what else to say but that I’m rooting for you and your family. Kia kaha!

Oh my gosh! I was in a car accident that totaled my car when I was 36 weeks pregnant about 4 years ago! We were rear ended by this guy driving at super-speed with a donut tire on his front wheel and couldn’t stop (we were at a light)!
That is devestating. I hope all is well for your family - I will keep them in my prayers that there’s nothing worse than what you mentioned in this post.

I hope your folks are ok. Hearing the news about accidents makes you automatically think of the worst that can happen. I’m about the same age as your parents or maybe even a bit older and last year I was the driver in a car accident.. I was changing lanes and got clipped by a pickup truck entering the freeway too fast. The only thing I even remember about the accident was bouncing off the guard rail. Thank goodness for airbags! They deployed, and it saved my life. The car was toast, and I had a concussion and losts of scrapes and bruises. Physical healing took about a month, emotional healing longer, so your parents will need your emotional support for a while to come.

Last night before I went to sleep I got the update via a lazy semi-dead twitter-stream and was of course worried. Being in ICU, not to mention brain bruising nor needing any kind of surgery is not a good thing for anyone - especially if we’ve reached the stage where we’re parents of other adults. Notice my hesitancy to use words like “over 50″ or my own least favorite Seniors to describe people in my generation.
This morning I’m somewhat relieved, and optimistic though hey I’m a mom and being concerned is our job..
Chris, please let your parents know that I send my best as just one of many who admires their willingness to let your public profile seep into their lives too and your willingness to share them with the people who “know” you in a virtual sense.
When I’m concerned about how I’ve dragged my daughter 3.0 and my husband into a semi-spotlight via the Frozen Pea Fund and http://boobsonice.com I think of other families who more or less willingly have something similar happen because of being related to - well you for instance - and it happens to your family on a much bigger scale. And I admire your parents a great deal because of what I’ve seen of your relationship, That’s before we get to the issue of raising sons which gets admiration on a whole new level.
Your parents always come across as people who handle life with grace and good spirit, remaining true to themselves amid hub-bub around them. That sense of self and feet on the ground mentality will certainly come in handy as they deal with the post-accident challenges.
Here’s where I’d normally make a “sending packages of frozen peas” joke but will stifle my Frozen Pea Fund reflex and simply wish all my best to the whole family.

I am really sorry to hear about your parents accident. I have had a friend who has fallen asleep at the wheel and totalled his vehicle. My advice to you all is to not drive if you feel the slightest bit tired. No one thinks their going to fall asleep at the wheel until they actually do. These type of accidents can happen if one is not fully alert.
The lesson that can be learnt from this is to stop periodically, get out walk about to keep your mind active. This could have resulted in a more serious scenario had other vehicles been involved which could have resulted in more than just injuries.

Very happy they’re okay. Lucky! My sister dozed off once when we’re driving home from LA to Sacramento (when we go see our parents). If I wasn’t paying attention, we would have swerved into a railing or worse.. .
You know, more people or injured or worse because they fall asleep behind the wheel than while driving drunk! Bad statistics, Everyone should be wary and always make sure you’re rested before you drive. Pull over if you feel drowsy or unwell, that is the best policy. You’re in control of a vehicle, it weighs tons!!! So be safe everyone.

Have already passed on my well wishes through Twitter but will repeat here how great your parents are (met them briefly and Gnomedex a couple of years ago). Bruises heal. Great to hear they are on their way to recovery…. and yes, it could have been much, much worse.

Good to hear that nothing more serious happenened. Hope they’re recovering and getting well.
I heard that relaxed people have less of a chance to get serious injuries than people who are extremely tense. Maybe that’d why they didn’t get hurt as much :)

I am sorry to hear about your parents. I was in a motorcycle accident about 6 years ago. I do not remember much about the accident or the next 3 days because of a massive concussion and bruising on my brain. In addition, my bike was totaled I remember going down when both my tires blew out and hitting the ground but nothing else. They need to have the foam stuff like on demolition man where if you are in a wreck your car instantly fills with a type of Styrofoam that protects you and all of the passengers from the impact

I’m sorry to hear that, but I’m very glad that they survived, and got away with minor injuries, it could have been much worse, i don’t mean to sound insensitive, in anyway i think that people shouldn’t drive if they aren’t clear minded, are tired or sleepy, angry, drunk, high on drugs, very sad (crying your eyes out), blind or are distracted in any other way, i know people the are speaking on the phone(not with a handsfree) or speaker function, e-mailing while driving , sending sms and changing clothes or taking of the sweeter while driving, that is really reckless, stupid and very dangerous.
My dad always said when you are driving, forget everything else except driving and he said: always plan ahead , make sure that you have enough of time to take it easy, there are many things that can happened, traffic jam, icy roads, police officer stops you and so on, if you rush it , then you will make a mistake and that little mistake may cost you your life.

I’ve been watching your live stream since August 2007 and to be honest, this news has really affected me in a way that I am shocked and appalled. I hope that your parents get the best of the best health care for their injuries. Please tell them how this has affected many people including myself here in your community. I also hope you get to visit them again soon in Des Moines!
Best regards,

Ah Chris, I was there that night that the folks on Twitter had told us here in the chat what had happened. I was seriously on edge, I had no idea how extensive the damage was so I was uneasy for a while.
Now that they’re in so much of a better condition I guess I’m more relived. I guess we’re through the worst of it all.
Don’t stress it, they’ll be fine.

Glad to hear that your parents are okay! I suppose that goes to show that cars are a lot safer than they used to be. Had this happened maybe 10 years ago, the outcome may have been different. But thankfully that isn’t the case. I’m really glad that car manufacturers are trying harder than in the past to build safer cars.

Wow. I did not even know you could bruise your lungs! I do not even know how I would react if my parents were involved in an accident like that. Thankfully no one was killed during the accident. Hopefully he situation does not get any worse. My prayers go out to you and your family, Chris!
