My Linksys Router Problems

It’s been so difficult to get back into the swing of things (really, this is the reason why I hate leaving home for extended periods of time). I’m taking care of tasks, one at a time – and realize I’ve fallen a bit behind.

What I didn’t need last night was my Linksys Wireless N Gigabit Security Router with VPN (WRVS4400N) dying on me. It’s pretty much a brick through no fault of my own. I plug ‘er in, possibly watch the lights dance, then witness her fade to black. That’s if the LEDs illuminate on power up in the first place. The hardware is hosed.

I purchased the router at CompUSA under the “All Sales Final” banner. Great! I’m not so sure I’m ready to turn around and get the same model now, given that it is likely to fail on me just as quickly. I haven’t gone through traditional Linksys support channels because at this point, it’s just as easy to replace it with something that works.

I’m taking any kind of serious recommendations for an equivalent replacement. This device had excellent configuration options, and quite a solid wireless range with the stock firmware.

Chris,

I am so sorry to hear about your Linksys router issues. I would suggest purchasing something from Buffalo. I currently own the Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 Wireless-G MIMO. I would suggest for Wireless N’ the Buffalo Wireless-N Nfiniti™ Dual Band Gigabit Router & Access Point.

I ask my brother about the router, cause I also have Lynxys too. The most likely way to get it, cause Comp USA is no longer in Seattle, but in Portland OR area. Or you may try out if Walmart or Frys has it, but if you don’t want it that way, how about TigerDirect.Com for the router. I also know Hard Drive North West in Bellevue hdnw.com, which they send me some specials every week with the mail. Will this help? Let me know!

Chris,

I have the WRVS4400N and, I have to say, I think you just got a lemon. I have this very same router and have had zero problems with it. I’ve also converted a few of my clients over to it and they too have had no problems. I’d say take a chance on the Linksys again. It’s a solid router from a great company.

Not sure about the 80211-n option, but I’ve used the 80211-g WRT54GL with the DD-WRT open source firmware (http://dd-wrt.com) installed. It has all the support for VPN connections as well as almost every other advanced config you could ever want. In fact, I bought a second WRT54GL with the DD-WRT firmware on it to act as a repeater and now I’ve got a full 5 bar signal in every spot of my 4000sq ft house. I’ve heard the new Buffalo routers are awesome range wise so that’s an option to look it. Regardless, I’d buy a lower price router with alternative firmware before spending the couple hundred bucks it costs for a specialty VPN based router.

Good luck!

Chris,

I have had similar problems with all kinds (Linksys, Dlink, etc). I just plan on replacing them every 2-3 years at this point. Anyhow, I recently bought into Buffalo for a couple reasons: 2 year warranty (they stand behind their product more than most) and ddwrt compatability (if you are interested in loading some new firmware onto the router). By placing the firmware on the router I void the warranty but there is a way to place the original Buffalo firmware back on the router in case warranty work is needed (hope not). DDWRT has a huge feature set worth checking out. Anyhow, this option might be worth exploring if you don’t mind a little tinkering – if not, it might be a good 2nd option. I recently wrote up a few web posts on my experiences with the new router and ddwrt:
First post (I bought a router and placed ddwrt on it)

Second post (some more enhancements)

Third post (bought a second Buffalo Wireless router for even more tinkering!!)

My biggest piece of advice? Don’t buy Linksys. I’ve had nothing but problems over the past few years with their wireless client cards and wireless routers. The only brand I trust anymore is Netgear.

I installed a DLink DIR-635 last fall, and after a very disappointing first month of horrid range(like 5 feet), which a firmware update resolved, I have been very pleased with it since. The range is excellent now, nearly five bars from all over the house, and the configuration options are many. I don’t think it has a VPN option, and it doesn’t have Gigabit ethernet on it, but I didn’t need those on it and there are more advance models that likely will have those. So far though, I have only connected B and G adapters to it.

I am in the woods, more or less though, so only have my own devices to worry about interfering with it. And as such, I don’t bother with encryption since I’ve seen it cause connection problems elsewhere. I am a computer tech that occasionally installs wifi, but I am not quite an guru on the subject.

This isn’t going to be helpful likely, but I’m in the market as well. Amazon reviews as usual showing everyone hating every router one way or another. That said, the Belkin with the LCD seems pretty neat :) Unfortunately my router sits in my attic so the bling would be wasted….

I have a buffalo turbo G router flashed with DD-WRT and it works like a champ. I haven’t had any issues as far as usability and performance. In my opinion, it comes highly recommended.

Take a look at what has been tested. http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/component/option,com_chart/Itemid,189/
IF you P2P or VoIP the DIR -655 has worke well. I still would call linksys they have done a good job in the past.

Well Chris I own a LINKSYS WRT54G Router which is connected to a LINKSYS BEFCMU10 Cable Modem and it’s been working great for many years, can’t complain too much about it. I’d reccomend this Router as a cheap replacement option, however if you want some more customization and support for third party firmware, make sure you got for the WRT54GL one as it’s firmware is Linux based I believe. Hope this helps. Stay cool.

I guess it depends, do you actually make use of the vpn functionality? (It’s always handy to have an encrypted tunnell to shuffle remote desktop data down ;) )

I don’t really have any experience with cable routers specifically, but the general rule of thumb for me when looking for any kind of router is the quality of the port forwarding rules – the dlink that I have for my adsl has a fantastic, unlimited rule based nat system instead of the horriffic 10 rules only crap that I have seen from the majority of routers tend to have.
The intrusion detection on yours is a very nice feature.

I recommend against going for negear or belkin routers – too many problems with them in the past.

The other thing I tend to do is to have a server of my own handling dhcp cause I have also had too many problems with routers locking up due to having to handle dhcp duties.

Yeah, that really sux. I have a Netgear wireless N gigabit router(RANGEMAX NEXT WIRELESS-N ROUTER GIGABIT EDITION), which has been great for me. http://www.netgear.com/Products/RoutersandGateways/RangeMaxNEXTWirelessRoutersandGateways/WNR854T.aspx

Chris you should go to forums on cnet

http://forums.cnet.com/5208-7585_102-0.html?forumID=19&messageID=2147563&threadID=199982

seems like everyone is having problems as well.

Chris, I have the same router altho I do not use it anymore. Mine is not a complete brick but close to it. I went back to a previous non Wireless-N Linksys router that was much more stable and oh, actually works. The Wireless-N router is plaqued with problems.

Stinking routers, either their hardware is too out of date to even bear a firmware update or they run so hot that they burn their guts out and die with a sigh. The router that my Internet phone company supplied was so out of date that it was like minding a bad child, cranky and contrary. I went to eBay and found exactly the router model recommended by my ISP, got it for 8 dollars, and voila, no more trouble. I completely forgot I even have a router.

I used to work for CompUSA and have seen the way they treat people, thats why I would never buy anything from them now. You cannot trust that company.

I have been running a us robotics 802.11g router with demand dial since 2004. It’s been cheap and dependable. My sister is running the linksys wireless g router with out any problems we would recommend either company. But for vpn connections I would use a small commercial router like Cisco.

I am a big fan of linksys. I currently own a Linksys ADSL Ethernet Modem (ADSLME1), Linksys Etherfast Cable/DSL Router (BEFSR41 v.2), Linksys Wireless-G Access Point (WAP54G v.2), and a Powerconnect USB 2.0 4 Port Hub. Also just recently, I have also bought a Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router (WRT54GL v.1.1) for my new condo. I have not had any problems with my linksys networking products. I believe that you should contact linksys and describle your situation. Hopefuly they will replace your lemon with a new one.

d-link dlg-4500 :)

hi i have a wireless -G Broadband Router.
it never worked first they told me that i can not set it up with a Mac then i tried with Pc but then the man (that i don’t trust talked that the Firmware need to be updated but i dont have any idea about what i have to do.
can any one help

Thats too bad. I hope they at least give you a replacement of the same model because what a waste or money that would be if they didn’t. Its basically stealing from you.
