A community member writes: “I have been a player of the MMO, Massive Multiplayer Online game, City of Heroes and the expansion, City of Villains since the original CoH came out in April of 2004. I have ran across plenty of newbies and general idiots over the course of almost four years. I hope these tips help people not to be such “noobs”.”

  • Don’t spam the announcement channels with chit-chat. It is annoying going into some game zones (game levels/maps) and seeing people spamming chit chat to the entire map. Not only does it get annoying, but if you are looking for a team to play with, it makes that a little harder if your announcement scroll off the the chat screen quickly.
  • Don’t pester people with team invitations. If you want to invite someone, do the polite thing and send them a private message with the /tell command. This allows you to see if they would like to join your team. If they are not interested, or they are doing something else, wish them luck. Sometimes, they wish you luck back. If you invite first, you may end up getting ignored.
  • Don’t pester people to Power Level you. If you have friends who are willing to power level you, then run with them. Do not go to the high level zones and expect some random high level character to help you get a lot of levels quickly. If you want to level somewhat quickly on City of Heroes/Villains, then run the Task Forces for heroes and the strike levels for villains. When you play these at the lowest available level, you tend to level up around two, three or even four levels in the span if the Task Force/Strike Force.
  • Don’t pester the people in the auction houses. Some people worked hard, in the game that is, to get what they are selling. Just because you need to get the one thing there that cost more than what you got, then work to get the extra bit in the game. If you have friends that play, ask them if they can let you have the amount you need. Just don’t pester them, or they will not be your friends for long.
  • Don’t pester someone asking if they have a TeamSpeak or a Vent server. Chances are, if you annoy them and they have one, you wont get invited to join. Also, once on a TS / Vent server, don’t annoy the people there. Don’t play music over the server, but make have your sounds levels good. You don’t want to be too quite or too loud. You may also want to make sure that the people are not hearing echos or game sounds effects from your side. It is also good to set your vent/ts client to have a P-t-t (Push to Talk) button configured. This way, game sounds wont activate the microphone, and it also wont allow your clients to constantly broadcast out.
  • Don’t pester someone to join a guild (super group/villain group in C O H/ C O V). If the guild is asking for people, then send a message to the person who is recruiting.

loL unfortunately because of what you just said you need to get “FAIL” tattooed on your forehead.

everybody says it suks…thats because of the graphics..they dont play the game it self until a higher lvl…you ass holes..

my prob lies in the boring gameplay, I want to participate in combat not watch my char whack away at an enemy.

I want to see weapon skills and extra commands besides magic/prayer and selecting the type of strike does not count. and dont get me started on the pk system.

Is do your job as your class/char and be nice in the groups and people around if your not in a group and soloing. This will get known to be a good player and u get far in the game. I learn alot of MMORPG skills by playing EverQuest the first one for over 5 years. Never Beg for nothing chris has this right aother players will get annoying with this and will not went to group with later on the game of thay come across you.

Lol Peewee AAAAAH. BTW I learned a new Symbolic Word .. ID10T .. thats awesome Chris thanks.

no no no, you dont understand llwAnDll. it sucks. that simple. no more to it. period. stop being ignorant and defensive.

codemasterda, if you dont wana just click on the enimie and watch your char “whack away at the enemy”, some good games for you would be Gunz The Duel, and Soldier Front.

i have been playing runescape since 2005 and im not bored it doesnt suck ok

Now for FPS Etiquette.

1. Don’t shoot below the waist.
2. Shoot only opposing team members.

just stop it….no one likes annyoing people!
lol Chris is Awesome

dont nade teammates either!

I can some it up in one sentence.

Don’t be a pest!

in addition, if you group.
Know your class!

That sums it all up. :D

I play a game known widely as RuneScape. It’s fun, but frowned on by most kids my age. I totally agree with everything in this top 5. I think that anyone who plays MMORPG’s should read this. Actually, anyone who plays video games in general where you interact with other people should read this.

I’ve been playing Guild Wars for over 2 years, and all of these tips really stretch across all MMORPG, some even into other genres.

Something that really helps the overall experience, in Guild Wars atleast, is joining a smaller, mature guild. My guild is small, but very experienced and very helpful. In return, I commit just as much dedication as they’ve shown me.

You get what you give, ya know?

Wow…what a way to end it :P

i dont really play massave mutli-player online rarely played games

this is a great post…it really helps to figure out why people hate you so much on the servers…thanks!

Those tips are so right. I’ve always encountered this annoyance several times. So far, the MMORPG’s I have played were Diablo II, Maple Story, and Runescape. Runescape is the one I have seen the must. So to avoid being the so called “noob,” its best to keep quiet until its necessary to speak to other players. I’m always the silent type in these kinds of games and in the end, its feels more rewarding when I do things myself. So overall, I agree its best not to pester.

I find that usually if you think about what you would do or say if you were standing face to face with someone is usually the right thing to do in an online game. Politeness and good manners will always get you more than being rude and pushy. This is true for all internet interactions, whether e-mail, mmorpg, chat rooms, whatever.

I think a lot of newbs, are hesitant to ask for assistance. even . You really shouldn’t be since you’d be surprised at how much people are willing to help out a new gamer if you just ask. and yes patience is key.

I sent this in, with all hope that people would listen to this, and stop being annoying. Now that I heard him read this, I must have pstered him by typing pester more than I realized. LOL

Honestly guys, golden rule. Treat (type or talk) others like you want to be treated. Strangely, it tends to work.

great points chris, I love your vids they are always very interesting

I’ve played wow for almost 3 years and have to say that most people when starting to play a game like this. They get confused. The best thing you can do is to join a Guild that will help you
good top-five

rarely played? WoW alone has 10 million players

this just made me want to go play warcraft, which i will go do now.

He meant that HE rarely played games. l2read.

Another thing is don’t “pester” people to do runs with you (World of Warcraft). Keep the Trade channels clear, and the Looking for group channel hot :D.

I love when you freak out like that

i like city of heroes

What Do You Think?
