MMORPG Etiquette

Being rude or offensive when playing an MMORPG can be fatal. You can get yourself removed and even “blacklisted”. Here are some tips sent in by a reader to help you behave yourself properly when playing.
- Don’t treat other players as though they are “gods”. Just because a player is famous – or a Mod – doesn’t mean you should treat them differently than anyone else. After all, they are just players. Sending messages to your friends that someone famous is logged in is pointless, and just fills up the chat interface.
- Trade Spamming is when in a bank, some people will come up to you and tell you to “buy! buy!”… without telling you what it is you should get! They also repeatedly click “trade” on you, which is extremely annoying. Just because a person is a high level, doesn’t mean they want to buy off of you.
- Don’t say “I’ll own you”. In most MMORPGs, random people will come up to you and say “I’ll own you”. What’s the point in this? In my opinion, it’s a waste of time saying it, when you could instead be training, learning a skill, or talking to friends. Speaking of friends… no matter what kind of argument you may be in, dont’ say “my friend will own you”. That’s like saying “my mommy is going to beat you up”. It’s just lame.
- What is up with pointless player killing? When you have no items on you, some players will pointlessly challenge you to a duel or just kill you flat out. Does this prove you are somehow the better gamer? No, it doesn’t. It just shows you’re rude, and care about nothing more than making yourself thinking your’re “bad”.
- Don’t beg. Begging is the most degrading thing in MMORPGs. No one wats to give you free stuff… go earn it yourself. Sometimes, people say “Omg I got hacked!”. That just shows they weren’t careful with their items or passwords. Randomly going up to someone and just asking for their good items isn’t cool. I don’t care if it’s your birthday, don’t just expect me to give you the things I worked hard for!

Yes well those were some good points although it was mostly focused RuneScape.
I used to play that game (recently quit) and people who did not follow those rules did get quite annoying. I am sure you find these type of people any where.
Also Chris, I was literally laughing out loud about the “PK” thing. Seeing that I also called it “Poke” and didnt know what “PK” meant till I was a high leel in th game which really made me look like a “noob.” Yea well whatever, for the game RuneScape, these rules should be followed and for any other game i am sure some of these rules apply to them as well.

I totally agree with this guy.But Runescape is not a MMORPG.He should try real (free) MMORPG’s like 2Moons,Rappelz,Cabal,Lunia and stuff like that.(I hope he will read this.:)And a tip:join to a guild and go kill High Level Mob’s or go to Dundeon Siege’s.

That is a great set up tips. I’m guessing that the MMORPG is RuneScape, which I play and this list is so completely true. These things happen ALL the time! I really hate it when someone follows me and asks for free stuff. But now in RS there’s a trade system so trades are balanced. For example if you have something work $500 000 the person buying your item has to be within a maximum of $30 000 of it.

i play ffxi like theres no tomorrow. theres no real PvP so alot of these problems aren’t found there. ffxi is worldwide too (even each server) so you get to play with Europeans and Japanese players as well as Americans.
the last one about begging however is very true. don’t freaking beg for stuff! everyone was poor and new once, we all found our way.
was funny Chris didn’t know what PK means, you’d think he’d have played some mmorpgs in his’ day!

The only thing I ask while playing MMORPG’s is respect from other players. Face it, without respect you will not play the game. If players of any level will respect each other, you will have better time playing.
This is my opinion respect is everything.

I really agree with the one about not treating famous players or mods like they are gods, I believe it actually makes it harder on the one treating them like gods since then they feel obligated to act different than their normal selfs to please the one they are talking to. What is being liked by people if it’s not based on your own opinions and thoughts?
As far as asking for items from others, it certainly does get annoying. You know what I think, is that you are only a noob if you act like one, I mean even if you are new, so long and you watch your grammar and respect other and don’t act like a helpless baby, then I wouldn’t consider them a noob.
Also I do wish people wouldn’t act like such jerks just because they are probably thousands of miles away from someone who they are insulting and won’t face any consequences. It’s everywhere and theres no stopping it even ignoring it is hard but it’s worth it in the end when you find a decent person able of carrying a conversation, and if all goes well you get a new friend.

MMORPGs are my type of game.. But i’ve never really played a real MMORPG aside from SecondLife if that even counts as one. I’d love to get my hands into WoW eventually when I get a more powerful enough computer that will handle it.
The one thing that really got me when in SL was people would pointlessly come to you and say.. “Do you have any money? I’ll pay you back in a week..” or something like that. Like I’m going to go give someone out of the blue money every time they ask. To do so is only going to welcome more “begging” for money and what not from them. Just don’t do it! Yeesh.
One other thing that i’d like to point out is if ya got a microphone.. don’t sound like you are eating the thing. If you are that hungry, go get food and don’t eat while talking or hrm.. don’t talk while eating! Thats down right disgusting.
There’s my two cents. :)

I play a game called SilkRoad Online. That game is filled with people like the ones stated in the video. At some points in time I cant walk two steps without a person asking for a trade and to be in a party. There are quite a few people that repeatedly ask for a trade while I am attacking monsters. This is annoying because while they are asking you cant attack the monster. People need to learn to be respectful to other players. Luckily this game allows you to block trade and party requests so these people cant attempt to continually ask for a trade even after you said no.

Yeah, I absolutely hate playing MMORPG’s because of the people who do those types of things that you listed above. I mean really do they have to come up, and do that? It ruins the entire game for me, and everyone else. I stopped playing games like those because of this. I’m considering possibly going back to playing them. I’m just not sure exactly when I will…

Great tips, Chris. Many players don’t think about what they are doing/saying/typing… yeah. I also feel that a lot of the younger kids try to make themselves look like grownups by cursing, being abusive and trying to be “cool”. The thing is, the grownups know and those who don’t know right off usually catch on really quick. Just be polite – no reason to ruin it for other people. We all pay money for the service.

I used to play World of Warcraft, and I swear the majority of the players of the game are very very snobby. Most times if you do not know how to do something no matter how complex in the game you are instantly “flagged” as noob by the people in your raid/party. I was always nice while playing and tried to help as many people as I could.

Some people just do exactly what you said not to do, and like in RuneScape, which is not an MMORPG, people come up and try to trade, and a lot of times people buy all of a certain item in a store and leave none for anyone else. I completely agree with you Chris. On World of Warcraft, i have not played it for very long but, I’m sure people act just like they do on RuneScape. And RuneScape is impossible to hack.

This goes for any team game, not just MMORPG. If your on a team, WORK WITH YOUR TEAM. Its so frustrating when everyone runs off in their own direction trying to get the same goal. Just stay together! youll have a better chance. Its amazing how much more you sctually WIN if you play with your team. And no team killing…. its just annoying.

My recomendation or opinion will be to just play your game and dont tke it so serious still is just a game is not like you are going to spend all your life in there or the your life depends of it.

I’d love to see those “rules” tatooed onto every brain of every 10 year old that plays RuneScape. After almost 3 years of playing, I’ve unsubscribed, and will not be looking back- the game environment there is just a slum. If you’re not being begged from, you’re being bombarded with “boyfriend/girlfriend” spam, and God help ya if you’re an adult that plays- I’ve never had to deal with such behavior.
RS was the first mmo-type game I ever played (being old school, I didn’t think I’d enjoy the interaction with others) & the enviroment, plus corporate attitude almost completely turned me off the whole thing.
Anywho- those are all great tips, now if only those engaging in that bratty behavior actually read it. >.

Yep this is rs to me i could tell lol. Well ya, its sometimes annoying for me when beggers ask me for 3k in f2p and i don’t mind giving free 3k or more to pple (depends). Yep, Chris probly played this game or not … just my opinion. Well its mostly pointless that u get nothing in drop partys when there is a bunch of players having the same percentage as you of getting like 20m or more or a whip or a blue party hat (wish there was two party rooms or idk.) well i’m off . I’ll check this site out again.
