Microsoft Lifecam VX-7000

I received the new Microsoft LifeCam VX7000 camera and hooked it up. Unfortunately, I’m having serious issues with it, just as I did with the last version. This is really shocking to me, and disappointing.

If you look on my screen, what you’re seeing is not special effects I’ve added. This is a live feed, directly as it is coming from the camera. It almost looks as though it’s a television with vertical hold problems, mixed in with color effects. I’ve tried it now on my Vista setup, as well as my XP setup. The problems exists on both machine, with both types of O/S. Therefore, I know it’s a hardware problem with the camera itself, not a software problem.

This is really surprising and disappointing. I expect better from Microsoft. I know, here come the jokes. But seriously guys… I’ve never had a complaint about a Microsoft keyboard or mouse. But I had the old VX6000 LifeCam, and had difficulties like this, as well. I expected much better out of the new camera, especially since it costs about $100.00. However, it works much like I would expect a $10.00 camera to work.

This isn’t really a review. It’s more of a “buyer beware”. I really like the Logitech camera I use. The hardware is great, but I’m not in love with the software. I’m still looking for that one perfect webcam I can use, whose hardware AND software I love.

What are your recommendations? What webcam do you use, and what do you love and/or hate about it?

That is disappointing, and I agree there is no reason why the current webcams shouldn’t be on par with digital compact cameras

I remember using an old digital camera via a usb cable and some drivers to use as a webcam, but that would be really silly having it powered by another cord and just lack of compatibility issues – really hope to see something soon

I got a Logitech Orbit MP, software seems great and the camera itsself as hardware being able to rotate, its great, the picture quality seems to beat alot of other webcams for around the same price. :D

You should return it and get a new one, perhaps you just got a lemon:p

My parents won’t let me have a webcam while I’m living with them. How sad is that? I’m 23 and graduated from college. I would ask for a webcam for Christmas but I’ve already talked to them and they say they won’t buy one for me. They don’t get why I want one. I’ve tried pleading my case, but to no avail. Their house – their rules. Eh, I guess I’m alright with that.

wow thats why i never buy those things

I paid $80 for a Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000 and I have to say, the video quality is outstanding for the price. Chris is correct about the Logitech software that bundles with the cam. It just stinks. BUT, the overall picture/video quality puts the Logitech leaps and bounds ahead of Microsoft’s garbage. I think Microsift should stick to OS’s and get that right before waging efforts on hardware!

yeaaahhh just like da ps3, no!! wait a second xbox 360s break after a month and ps3s don’t.

can u explain that????

microsoft is doing bad lately

Chris are you sure it’s a problem with the motherboard/graphics card/usb port ? I’m using v6000 and 7000 on two different computers both with xp and never had any problem with them… well ok, the automatic white balance adjustment is severely impaired in low light conditions, but never anything resembling your problems.

hehe, read before posting aaargh I meant of course:
*Are you sure it’s NOT a problem with the motherboard/… ?

nerd its a webcam stop sitting at the computer and get a life

Well, microsofts operating systems constantly crashing. The benefit of exploding is that you get a newer, a better. While if the OS crashes, you can’t exchange it for a better one. (well, except OSX86, linux och freeBSD)

Microsoft has always been bad. lol :)

My Lifecam VX-6000 is fine on Vista and I’m posting video’s with it. Cost $80

Chris that’s a Microsoft Deathcam VX-7000 I think you made a mistake! :P

hahaaaaa I totally agree on that one ;-)

time to ’switch’ pirillo

Seriously I hope apple announces new penyrn sp? Mac pros at mac world in a few weeks.

I use Logitec cameras right now, I am not completely happy with their quality but it is the best thing going in my price range.
Pleasse! No one buys microsuck products anymore, I quit 8 years ago when I was among the first to buy their wireless keyboard, mouse, and gaming pad. Then they quit supporting them and I realized their little game.

Hi chris,

Is there a inexpensive network camera that you can recommend which has 802.11 b/g capabilities and can deliver audio as well as a real time image

Thanks

Tony :)

I’ll give you tip, Linux.
Ubuntu for me, anyone else switched over yet?

Make the switch and ditch the bitch!

I have a VX-6000, the microphone on it completely stopped working after 3 days. I barely used it too!

I watched you talk about the Microsoft LifeCam VX7000 camera .I recently purchased the Microsoft LifeCam VX-1000 this is the old cheap model which may not sound as good as the VX7000 model however it does seem to beat it out in one crucial feature, it actually works! I downloaded the software pluged it in and I was video confrencing with friends and I used it to go live myself in minutes. Just saying that somtimes the bigger more expensive models may not always be better.

I bought one of these but it was the 6000 it has the similar problems if not the same. I just switched back to my old logitech quickcam

Apple knows that people are going to be using webcams, due to their apps like Photobooth, iChat AV (which is amazing in Leopard), as well as other webcam uses such as streaming, youtube recording, facebook recording, iMovie recording. There are alot of people on youtube that produce little series’ with nothing but a mac and an iSight camera.

They cant play games…..im sorry, but pull your head outa ur ass man…have you read game news. EA an some other big game makers are developing for OS X.

Do some research before you make comments like this one.

what a waste of $100

I looked at this cam a best buy and they tried to steer me to a logitech right away. Jbuckk 7777 your the one that needs to grow up .

I just use my video camera as a webcam.

We have been controlled by the elite. The elite control the banking system, radio, tv,gov, and churches. They have taken our ability to question authority. We are more materialistic because of them. Why would they do this? -> They work for evil forces not wanting us to evolve spiritually. We will not take any material thing when we die, not even our skin color. Knowledge is power.

Chris,

I’ve had a similar bad experience with the Microsoft Lifecam, but mine is a VX-1000. My father purchased 2 VX-1000’s, one for my mother and one for myself, because I moved about 2100 miles away from home and they wanted a tway to see my smiling face. The best I can get out of the webcam is maybe a still image, because if either I or my mother use the webcam it causes our computer to bluescreen. They are 2 completely different machines, she has a Dell laptop, I have a custom made machine. We’re not even running the same OS’es; she’s running XP, I’m running 2003. I was just happy I got to try out another reliable microsoft hardware product.

Thanks,
Mike

i miss the intel web cams that was also a camera

Although the drivers aren’t the greatest, the Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 is an extremely good camera for the money. You can record video on up to a 1600×1200 resolution (depending on your CPU). Adjust focus manually or automatically via software. It produces a crisp and well lit image, even in horrible lighting conditions (example: only light source is an LCD monitor) and has all those cool little video effects and 3d avatars.

I was experiencing exactly the same problem with the VX-7000 model. I have the following system:
- GIGABYTE GA-MA69GM-S2H motherboard
- Processor AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4000+
- Graphic card ATI Radeon X1250 (included in motherboard)
- 1 GB in memory

I bought this system as mediacenter. I am running a ATI Catalyst software that I read somewhere, could conflict with the Lifecam.

I had updated all possible drivers without success. Then I tried to connect it to my laptop HP Compaq nw8440. The LifeCam worked much better on that machine but I was still not happy with the video quality as really slow movement caused highly blurred image

Hope this helps!

i own a logitech quickcam pro 9000 and it is the best webcam for the money and it is much more reliable and the audio is clear and the video is spectacular. Microsoft webcams are just horrible.

I have the same hardware described in the comments by Steinar.

…with the same issues.

Dump this thing and get your cash back if you can then get a Logitech cam.

Microsoft sucks …as usual.

Better yet, before you install your new logitech cam …wipe your machine and install Linux.

Enjoy!

the audio is distorted dumbass on the 9000 if u talk to loud! it sux

I have a Lifecam VX3000 and have no problems with it. My friend has a VX6000 and we had all kinds of sound problems with it. Last night I told her to uninstall the 6000 and put her old microphone on her computer. She can not get her old microphone to work now after having the microsoftw lifecam on it prior. So I told her to leave her old mic. connected but to just plug the lifecam back in WITHOUT installing it’s software. Now it works fine, sound and all. Her old microphone is NOT picking up the sound, her lifecam is now and doing it fine now. Go figure. I dont know why it works better without the requied software. This is NOT the best hardware that Microsoft has put out there, but it was FREE from Club Live Search. Maybe that is why it was FREE. I wouldnt recommend the lifecam line of cameras.

I have a “Hercules Clasic” a 30€ ,and i don’t recommand it eather!
Quality is very good,..

But i can’t plug and play, because it doesn’t reconnet after you unplug it. “unknown device” haha and after i plug it in about 20times, OR plug it in after i start the “hercules program”.. then it works and you can start chatting..
BUT i hate the problem!!!
Even changing drivers didn’t work…. so its CRAP!

I bought Microsoft LifeCam VX-1000. And I can freely say it’s an excellent WebCam. It is hi-compatibile with my Windows XP, and have some digital special effects when using Windows Live Messenger. It also have auto color and brightnes balance, but manual focus only. I did not have ANY problems with installing it (from original CD) or using it. I am very sattisfied with my Microsoft product. My recommendation for all users who likes to chat, especialy with Windows Live Messenger.

I have a VX-1000 and i love it. I hope this video doesnt detur you from thease amazing webcams!

Ouch dude… That cam looks like it’s about to explode. Lol.

I’m having the same exact problem on a Vista machine of mine. The cam worked fine on XP, when XP would actually see the cam.

This machine is an ASUS AM3100 running Vista, 4GB ram.

Research says it’s a USB ‘problem’.

I write video chat software for a living, I’ve played with quite a few cameras, needless to say.

This is the WORST cam software have ever had to install.

Generally I find the more money you spend, the better cam you get. Except for this. I’ll NEVER buy another MS webcam again.

I have a 1000x …. 3000x and a 6000x… they all work GREAT… i kept upgrading lol

I also think logitech cams suck bad quality bad sync… ive had a few of them as well .. icky

Bought Microsoft LifeCam VX7000. Thought specs was great but was fooled. Initially was fine. Now 3-4 days later image is upside down and black and white with green line on theleft screen.
Should have checkout users opinions first… duh!!

Microsoft LifeCam VX7000

I bought it too, without seeing all the bad comments. However, for me the camera does work. Sure it isn’t spectacular, but it does work. For me, it is the sound issue. It will “try” to type what I say (take 20 min for one sentence), so that might be a setting on my pc. Though, I can type faster now, so in the time it takes for one sentence, I can type almost a page of something.

What Do You Think?
