Meeting NVIDIA (I)

Here's a blast from the recent past to help set up the next blog entry. I was coming home from my first COMDEX a few months ago. The final hours in transit unfolded with unexpected surprises:

I was on the 8PM United flight home, so I got to the airport two hours prior to takeoff. Security at McCarran was pretty tight (hella better than SFO). I wandered into a cafe for a burger; as I was walking towards the back of the restaurant, I noticed a guy with an nVidia shirt on. I had to shake his hand. Not only have I been using and recommending their video cards for years, but at my presentation this afternoon, when asked about the best stocks to purchase, theirs immediately sprang to mind. Sadly, I can't invest in anything “tech” – since that would be considered a conflict of (editorial) interest. Anyway, he was happy to get the positive feedback, but I'm not sure he quite understood why I was thanking him. Nevertheless, I went about my merry way, not having the opportunity to meet his dining companion (as he was on a cell phone at the time).

On my way out, I ran into Jim Louderback – another TechTV staple. He was on my flight! While we work for the same company, Jim and I have never really had time to sit down and shoot the breeze. That guy is more wired than me, I swear – and that's a GOOD thing. He bought me a glass of red wine and we bantered for the better part of an hour. Now, I was reading Jim's columns long before I started Lockergnome; sitting next to him was sorta surreal. We headed to the boarding area and ran into Darci Wood (from the Screen Savers). She was just as exhausted as everyone else. Jim pulled a free upgrade on us and landed himself a first class seat. Bah! But, remember… the best was yet to come.

Darci was two rows ahead of me, showing off review units she wrestled away from the marketing parrots. Without even really trying, we were getting everyone's attention. Including the attention of someone sitting next to her. Are you familiar with the name Jen-Hsun Huang? Okay, let me try this: are you familiar with nVidia? Well, Jen-Hsun is the President and CEO of the company. Yeah, and he's a genuinely nice guy to boot! We were elated to meet him up close and in person. Ballmer's got nothing on him. Out of his front pocket he pulled one of the next generation nVidia chips – soon to be used aboard fighter jet systems. “Here, hold it,” he said. Impressive, Jen-Hsun. Good show.
