From the JoiIto channel: “Someone just filed for a trademark on 'blog' in Japan.” I love chat rooms. Sure, I usually lurk in 'em, but boy – what a great place to pick up on conversations, gossip, and links.

I suppose Microsoft could trademark the work blog and then come out with a new tablet called “The Blog”. Write your enties on your new “blog” and have it post to whatever site. That way they can charge even more money for something no one will use.

Anything can be trademarked. Ford Motor Company owns the word “Ford”. If you try and register a URL with the word Ford in it like fordsucks.com or fordreview.com, you'll get served papers. I remember another case a few years ago that ticked me off where a pretty commonly used phrase was trademarked. It happens all the time.
