Maui Ocean Center / Aquarium
One of the planned “activities” this week included a submarine voyage to the bottom of the sea. The 150-foot-deep part of it, anyway. Compared to our sub ride on the cruise to a very hot Catalina island last year, there wasn't much underwater activity on this one (other than coral and a few random fish). On our way back from the undersea tour off the coast of Maui, we decided to stop by the Maui Ocean Center / Aquarium for a visit. Otherwise, we'd have seen more dead fish (read: sushi) than living ones on this trip. I've been to countless aquariums across the country (not Seattle's, oddly enough). I wasn't expecting much more than the standard fare from this one, but right off the bat, the fish at this aquarium were proving themselves to be far less aloof than others I'd seen. Most of 'em were swimming right up to the glass, observing you as much as you were observing them! Because of this, we were able to snap a few good fish photos / videos (to be uploaded when bandwidth isn't as much of an issue). Even the turtles were swimming inches away from the glass! Not sure why the captive sea life was more engaging at this aquarium, but whatever Maui's magic is - I hope they keep it for future visitors.
