Mark Russinovich on Sony DRM Rootkits
Sony’s screw up in selling CDs laden with DRM that can only be described as spyware is well documented by the press at this point. At the heart of this controversy is Mark Russinovich of Sysinternals, who discovered the rootkit Sony installed on his system when he played a Van Zant Brothers CD on his computer. If you’re not familiar with Rootkits, Mark offers a great explanation on his site, but the gist of the story is a rootkit is a backdoor application that provides access to your system without your knowledge. With Sony apparently halting production of the controversial root kit installing DRM protected CDs a solution seems to be forthcoming, but only begrudgingly. Chris talked to Mark about the Sony CD Rootkit, what it means for system security and how you can protect yourself.

Tonight’s Guest: Mark Russinovich
Mark Russinovich of Sysinternals.com discovered Sony’s DRM Rootkit that has been receiving lots of bad press the past few weeks. Some people are calling out for boycotting Sony’s music products. Mark isn’t sure that is the right direction. However Mark will never purchase any copy protected CDs.
You can read more about the discovery on Mark’s blog: http://www.sysinternals.com/blog/2005/10/sony-rootkits-and-digital-rights.html
Mitch Keller’s Web Hosting 101
Mitch broke down the different types of web hosting packages that are available.
Virutal/Shared: Cheapest and most common. If you experience traffic surges it can get very costly.
Reseller: For larger sites, multiple sites, or will resell web hosting to other people. More expensive than Virtual.
Dedicated Server: Are servers dedicated completely to one client’s sites and typically include larger bandwidth allotments. They’re more costly and require more knowledge to run due to their complexity and the skills required to maintain them.
