Managing Household Chores by Using the Internet

The viewers on live.pirillo.com witnessed a bit of a disagreement between Ponzi and I, regarding division of household chores. For the most part, we agree on who should do what… but there are always going to be contention points. Ponzi has come up with a solution.

Our biggest contention point is the laundry. Who should do it, sort it, fold it, put it away? Neither of us really enjoys laundry, and sometimes we leave it to Wicket and Pixie to do. However, that tends to create an even bigger mess. Lucky for me, Ponzi subscribed us to Chorebuster.net. Well, maybe lucky isn’t the right word to use.

Chorebuster is a free service which allows you to manage the household chore division fairly. Simply input the chores (daily and/or weekly), weight them by the amount of time it takes to do each one, and let the site randomly assign the person with the chore. It’s very simple to do, and can potentially save you a lot of headaches.

However, I don’t much care for it. It’s not the site itself I have a problem with. It’s just too much organization for me. I know what chores need to be done, and I prefer to just do them. Ponzi, however, is more of the organized type, so this works perfectly for her.

Of course, since I’m married, I of course agree with Ponzi that this is going to be excellent for us. It’s great and wonderful! Yes, dear.

I’ve been using this for about a month now and it’s great. Helps to show just what’s done to make a household run – EVERYTHING that needs to be done. It’s especially handy when one of the users is a non-wage-earner. “Make all the money” gets you a lot of points! But it’s not just that you see what chores need to be done, it also lets you see what doesn’t need to be done right now. So instead of spending an entire day on a cleaning project, you just do a portion of it, schedule the rest for another day, and spend the afternoon doing something fun – guilt free. You know the rest will get done.

The only reason Chris does not have a dish washer is because Vista does not support the drivers ^_^

I built a FAB Excel spreadsheet once which organised the household bills – was perfect for students living together in a house. It allowed anyone to pay any bill, or buy anything for the general household, and just whack it in the file. The spreadsheet then worked out exactly who owed who how much, regardless of who had paid any particular bill.

Once I’d gotten over the intial resistance to technology barrier with my housemates, it made running the house SO much easier and friendlier. You could lend each other money though it, and everyone knew where they stood – anyone could pay money in at any time by putting a certain amount in – or they could take money out – the figures always tallied so it was so simple to manage, no matter what figures were involved.

Wish I’d backed it up though, as we were burgled (robbed, for our American cousins!) and my box went, taking with it my sharewarable development!

The chores we organised with a wall chart, and you could call people if any room wasn’t tidy when they were rota-ed on! They also had to ensure that condiments, bread, butter and milk were always stocked, which drove the non-mayonnaise eaters mad!

I wanna get the beginning part of this vid turned into a ringtone “you need to sop watching those videos, you need to do the dishes, you need to take out the trash, you need to walk the dog…”

I second that, that was my answer to helping swoop the floor, just after I had a disagreement..
