Mac vs PC

Chris believes that buying into the Apple monopoly gives end-users a much better experience:
- The user interface is far superior to that of Windows and Linux
- With control of the hardware, Apple can almost guarantee a great experience that OEMs running Windows cannot.
- The customer service experience with Apple is also superior to most other customer service experiences.
- Since you cannot run OS X on another platform (legally) you can use OS X as a host system, and boot into Windows or Linux with parallels.
What do you think? Is Apple going to expand their monopoly and continue to chip away at Microsoft's position?

Chris, you make some great point. I couldn’t have said it better myself. I’ve been a diehard Mac user for 12 years now, ever since I started into the publishing world. I know enough about Windows to know that I don’t ever want to go back. Thanks for your honesty.

A nicely balanced argument, Chris, but what I’d take issue with is that like a lot of Mac supporters you’re not comparing like with like. For the price of an iMac you could have a superbly specified PC built by an independent computer supplier who is interested in making Windows sing and doesn’t fill up the hard disk with crapware. Dell and HP are really designed for people and businesses on a limited budget. Here in the UK for example I could buy a machine from Evesham Computers fitted with top class components with capabilities far in excess of any iMac. It would also come with a three year on site warranty and unlimited telephone support from people who are at least as savvy as Mac geniuses. In my opinion bad experiences with Windows are not necessary as long as you invest as much as you would in a Mac.

Hey I just wanted to say that I have been a windows user all of my life. I have never had the time to sit down with anyones OSX mac and get a feel for it. At 19 I have been through Windows 95 all the way to Vista. I have ALWAYS encountered problems. That is why Vista was only worth it for me once I could torrent the ISO. Windows just simply pisses me off. It never runs smoothly and flawlessly. Compatibility and functionality just seems poor. It will always take me a long time to anything, and from what I have heard, read, and briefly seen, a mac is for me. I don’t game on computers. I prefer console games overall. Even though EA has signed over some stuff for them now. I hope that when I get my student loan in a few weeks, that I am happy with my MacBook Pro, because even if they are not as fool proof as some people say, I am software (not hardware tho, lol) savvy and at least it will be a change. Oh and they look much better then 90% of PC’s too.
