http://live.pirillo.com/ – Think you are 100% safe from security vulnerabilities because you’re a Mac user?

Take a time out, and think again. No operating system is 100% safe. Chances of being infected on a Mac are much less than with Window because the exploits are different. Macs enjoy security by obscurity. If you are an advanced user who is careful with your surfing and downloading habits, you will be safe using a Mac. Knowledge is key, and this situation is no different. You should educate yourself about computer security, no matter what type of system you are using.

**Turn on the firewall that comes built into the Mac. This will keep you from being exploited.

**Consider using an Anti-Virus program designed for Macs. While there are currently no known viruses for the Mac O/S, it is certainly possible that someone…somewhere…will try and create one. Is this a must have? No – but it won’t hurt, either.

Compute smart. Compute safe. Think before you click.

If there are no known viruses for the mac, why would you recommend using antivirus software? Seems like a waste. It’s only going to steal cycles and, more than likely, make your mac less stable – especially if the AV driver runs in kernel mode.

Will someone try and create a virus for the mac? Sure, of course. But exploits are more likely to be made through buffer overflows, code and mysql injection techniques and good old fashioned social hacking.

Right, because Norton nuking your virtual memory swap file and all antivirus packages make your Mac run dog…. s….. l…….. o……….. w.

But yeah, I guess other than that, it’s not harmful.

Security by obscurity is not the reason Macs are more secure than the Windows. Macs are more secure than Windows because OS X is open source and based on the proven FreeBSD Unix kernel. FreeBSD has 15 years of secure, solid, open source development.

Windows is insecure by design while Unix and Unix-like operating systems are secure by design. Microsoft solutions have far more exploits than comparable open source solutions; IIS vs Apache, Windows vs FreeBSD, NetBSD or OpenBSD. Microsoft has more unpublished exploits that hackers and script kiddies “publish”. Vista already has 14 exploits including the old animated cursor exploit.

The issue is poor code written under pressure from the Marketing dept operating on the premise that consumers are going to upgrade every 18 months anyway. Microsoft pays little attention to securing userland applications and and preventing privilege escalation (animated mouse exploit).

P.S.

You do understand that Steve Gibson is a fraud??
I’m a security expert because I said so.

I would like to recommend to everyone.
Search-and-destroy Antispyware is an excellent scanner that I would like to recommend to everyone. I simply love it. In the past I have tried many different types of scans. Some of them were free and others cost quite a bit of money but they all seem to pick up the same types of bugs. The antispyware solution from Search-and-destroy is less expensive than most and it will clean your computer and keep it working great just like the more costly scanners. Click on Search-and-destroy to learn more about this scan and how it can help you protect your computer.
