Losing Weight and Getting in Shape for New Year’s

It seems as though everyone is always determined to lose weight and get in shape with each New Year. Here are some tips to get you started on that track, and keep you there.
- Frequency You have to work out regularly in order to see positive changes in your body. If you want to lose weight for example you will need to increase your aerobic activity level. You will need to regularly work our 3-5 times per week (min 3).
- Intensity Work hard and good things will happen. You have to strive to work just a bit harder than your last workout or you will not make improvements. If you are doing push-ups and the most you can do is 25 the next time try to do 26 or so. To incorporate technology into your workout buy a heart rate monitor and spend more time in your target heart rate in each consecutive workout.
- Type Do both resistance (push-ups, sit-ups, free weights, ect.) and aerobic (running, swimming, biking, ect) exercises at every workout.
- Time Time is the simplest to manage. Divide your resistance workouts into at least 3 sets of 10-15 reps. Your aerobic workouts should last at least 20 minutes, but could be longer.
- Fun For heavens sake, do something that you enjoy. If you like to swim…..swim. If you like to run. Run. If you’re doing something you like chances are you will stick with it and it will become a habit.

It doesn’t count as a comment because you didn’t actually comment on the video.

Be persistent and determined! Many people give up on working out regularly because they get lazy. “Ugh, I’m tired. I’ll go tomorrow.” Eventually, you will totally just stop going. So be persistent and keep at it! Try and have a friend to go with so you can support each other.

Great tips Chris. I especially like the one about the heart monitor – as a fellow geek I absolutely love tracking all sorts of data and these sorts of things help to keep me motivated. Surely, my wife laughs at me every time I update my spreadsheet – but she certainly appreciates the results in the end.
Your point with both aerobic and resistance exercises is well taken too. For the longest time (years and years) I’ve only done strength training, and have only just begun aerobic training (ran my first mile in years two nights ago! Yay!) – I’ve noticed that its had a large impact on how many more reps I can do with regards to strength based exercises. That is, my lungs and heart were frequently the limit on how many push-ups I could do.

but like you should do resistance cause you need healthy muscles too… like you don’t have to be a body builder but its bound to be good for you

Great points, however I think something is missing, Someone should start off slowly and then do more exercising, If you are not fit as it is and then jumping in to a heavy routine is setting yourself up to fail, your going get frustrated because your body isn’t doing all that you are wanting it to do. Starting off slow and with what you can do is better and if you keep the mind set I will get to that point you will keep going.

The easiest way to lose weight; cut the beer, the fast foods, no sweets in other words live a miserable life, but will look hot like OJ Simpson.

Eat more whole grains, fruits and veggies. But don’t have the mentality that you cannot eat a ‘forbidden food’ (what does that really mean anyway?) like candy bars…just don’t eat them all day everyday!

something that works wll for me is to aim to eat 1500-2000 calories a day then aim to burn between 700-500 by running, cycling, swimming whatever works best for you. For me that burns about a 1 k.g. a week but everyones different. Also try to do some weights focus on big areas like your back chest and legs as that will help burn more fat.

That’s what I did but jogged up to 4-5 hours during the summer. I went from 270lbs to 185lbs. Cutting out corn syrup and sugar also helps plus a vegetarian diet.
