Linux on the iPhone: So What?!

Sure, it’s interesting to see that Linux on the iPhone is possible – but it’s anything but a practical development. Such was my sentiment on Twitter a half hour ago… and the responses are pretty much in line with the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mentality. I asked – who would want this?!

TreyRust
TreyRust @chrispirillo umm.. me? I don’t like the restrictions of the apps.. but you have a point… just get an android phone if you want linux
Surrender1224
Surrender1224 @chrispirillo in its current state no one. However if they get more support for it then I can see it being a big thing. Who knows tho.
Jonathan Rothwell
jrothwell @chrispirillo to expand its functionality…? Maybe it’s just me being dense, BUT…
David Sterry
weex @chrispirillo I want that. We’d alone better off with a powerful free software communications device.
James Savage
catfacts @chrispirillo In its current state no one, but after it matures it may offer server possibilities :P Honestly, nothing MobileTerminal can’t
Joshua W.
joshua_w @chrispirillo Well I’d like to play with Linux on my iPhone. I really would like to be able to dual boot Android.
Fabien Poitras

drummer2207 @chrispirillo Wouldn’t portable Linux be so cool? An operating system on an iPhone and iPod Touch
Wagner Skellington
Skellington @chrispirillo It makes no sense! I agree with you. Absolutely!
TechBabe
TechBabe @chrispirillo “that’s as useless (and pointless) as tits on a boar…” I’ve gotta’ use that somehow. Maybe on a conf call.[Need a job first]
FazzMunkle
FazzMunkle @chrispirillo Isn’t iPhone OS already a *nix type OS? I’d use the term POSIX, but I’m not knowledgable enough to know if that’s right.
brad
Matt Smith
mattstech @chrispirillo Because it’s cool! OK, it’s not so practical yet – but imagine running Android on the iPhone! Talk about cross-platform love!
Joshua Schnell
macgasm @chrispirillo what if you could duel boot into a full os of linux on it? Would that change your mind?

Robert D'Alesio
dalesio @chrispirillo But just think, if they can get linux on the iphone, they may be able to get other OSes ex: Android???
Oli
Steake @chrispirillo Forgive me here, but JESUS, witch linux geek wouldnt!
Jackson Miller
jaxn @chrispirillo I would like to at least try a dual boot iPhone with Android. (I saw a dual booth with Windows Mobile a while back)
Eric Cumbee
ericcumbee @chrispirillo useful probably not but, it would be cool i guess thats enough to make it worth it to many.
Ryan Becker
ryguy999 @chrispirillo Some crazy people are too obsessed with Linux
Craig
BigDonVespa @chrispirillo isn’t that like iphone turning itself into a wannabe iphone killer? And Failing?
AJ Cutshall
Nicholas Butler
loudmouthman @chrispirillo yeah that about sums up more thoughts. Linux on the iPhone. So another platform for linux to not quite work properly on then.
Derek K. Miller
penmachine @chrispirillo Because it’s there, Chris. Because it’s there. Remember Linux on the old iPods? How even less useful was that?
Zetacon
Zetacon @chrispirillo I’m surprised if Apple would allow that.

I would love linux on my iphone but thats not saying much since if I could have windows 3.1 on my iPhone I would take it over the iPhone OS. First off I could do really advanced things like copy and paste, download a file to storage, copy any file I want for storage on the device, the browser might be stable for more than 5 minutes at a time, it would lock up less, flash would work, and so on. Per the usual – Apple hardware is at the very top of the consumer level electronics – innovative and very high quality – well thought out – however none of those guys can write good software…utter crap.

At the present time i don’t think this Linux on the Iphone is going to work very well due to security reasons. However if the creator of this does a little more work on this i believe Apple should be taking powerful steps to see that it doesn’t happen. Although i would prefer that Apple doesn’t take that course of action.

I suppose we’ll see what happens hey!

Why do people jail brake iPhones? Because they want more functionality. I’m sure it’s a similar goal that causes people to want Linux on an iPhone. I know many people posting above are Apple fans, That’s cool. However, why bash and make fun of the ability to put linux on an iPhone? After all, Isn’t the Apple mentality to “think different?”

I don’t see the point in this very much…

I could easily see them implement Adroid natively on the iPhone now. And I know they will.

An amusing project, sure. But i’m with TreyRust; there are far less expensive ways to have a Linux based smart-phone, that are not significantly less of a system than putting it on an iPhone. There isn’t much point in paying for an iPhone then making it not an iPhone.

It’s sort of like the hello world script running on a console. Its worth is not the simple text message, but it means that running code on the platform is possible. Linux on the iphone in its present state is not beneficial to anyone. However just like with the hello world message this shows that you can run another OS on an iphone. Android could very well be coming to the iphone. As for it not being broke, I disagree. I have the apple iphone OS on my iphone and while being very good, it is far from stable. Constant crashes, appstore banning useful apps, limitations in the SDK etc. Android is a great alternative if it ported to the iphone and I would at least check it out. Because android is open source it will likely overtake the iphone OS in overall functionality soon.

I’m very excited to hear that its possible to put Linux on the iPhone. I think this will open a lot of doors for various people.

well if Linux is possible on the iPhone then maybe another OS like say Google Android, now that would be awesome a dual booting iPhone.

What Do You Think?
