Most of us don’t even think about what light bulbs we use in our homes… or how we use them. Here are some tips sent in by a community member that may shed a little light on the subject.
- When replacing a light bulb, try to get one that uses less power. We now have the new twisted fluorescent bulbs, and they use less power than their incandescent counterparts… while putting out the same amount of light.
- If replacing a broken bulb, take a potato and cut it in half. Place it on the bulb and apply a little pressure toward the socket. Doing this will allow you to get the parts of the broken bulb that were left in the socket, and remove them. BE AWARE to make sure the light switch is turned off first. Don’t become a crispy critter.
- When putting a new bulb in a socket, rub a small amount of regular bar soap (not the liquid kind) on the bottom of the bulb. This will allow it to turn in the socket more easily, reducing the chances of breaking it.
- Know what type of bulb you need for various lights. Some lamps are better set for two and three-way bulbs. No, those bulbs are not sexual. They are designed to have different output levels per click of the power knob. Some lamps may take a special bulb. Just make sure you know what type of bulb the lamp needs.
- This final tip mainly pertains to theatre lights. After a bulb blows, make sure the bulb has cooled down enough to change it. Household bulbs normally don’t get that hot, but the stage lights DO. If you can still feel heat, give it a little more time to get cooler, or use a good heat resistant glove.

well,i have my own way to look at it
PS3,if you are rich and can throw $499.99 or more to a console ” without a game ”
Wii, if you like sports, can pay $249.99 again without games and if your a game addict that if you want the caractr of the game to dodge, you get carried away and move the controler
PSP, if you like portable, like watching your favorite anime while away from home, internet and if music, plus i put psp in here because i have one and the video for psp is broken by chris

With fluorescent lights, I like to take off my shoes, stand in a small pan of freshly poured mountain-spring water, and firmly grasp both ends the bulb as I remove it from the socket.
I have naturally curly hair and I find this helps to straighten it without having to pay for an expensive chemical process.

I just bought some full spectrum light bulbs from Amazon (4 for approx. $20, including shipping). They are supposed to be the most sunlight-like light out there. IIRC they are also energy efficient/eco-friendly. These are the type of lights people suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder can use to treat their depression. I figure it couldn’t hurt much to try them. Well, they might give you a sunburn, because they do emit UV rays.

They also have those super fancy LED light bulbs. They are expensive (sometimes in the hundreds) but they use like 1 watt. Be cool to see a graph of how long it would take to save money with them.

One caution with replacing the bulb with a compact flourescent. There are studies that are linking the increases of headaches and migraines with the use of fluorescent lighting of all kinds. It is recommended to use fluorescent filters or bulbs that are specifically designed to more closely simulate natural light.
And don’t just throw that fluorescent bulb away when it finally stops working. They have mercury in them and need to be recycled.

Technology covers most aspects of the modern world. Light bulbs are at least as valid as vapid YouTube videos…
Query: Why do bulbs blow out prematurely, no abuse/movement or excessive on/off. In my house they just plain don’t last, regardless of brand, type, style or cost.
And despite the hype and push, I have never had one of those mercury laden compact fluorescents last more than 60 days. I could buy a case of regular bulbs and not pollute the landfill for the same money.

I have already replaced most of my lightbulbs with the twisty fluorescent ones. The only problem is they contain mercury and if they brake, you are suppose to call in a hazmat team to clean it up. If one brakes in my home, I will ignore the possible future medical problems and dispose of it in a landfill.

Can I point out that low energy compact fluorescent bulbs contain mercury. If you break one of them, be careful.

Hmmm. I like the potatoe tip. I tried removing a broken lightbulb. I thought the power was off, but alas… Shocking!
