My favorite way to use the 'z' piece, or the 's' piece is to try and lay it as flat as possible. Actually this goes with all of the pieces except the line and of course the square since there is only one way to lay the square. I try to keep the later two pieces to the side and use the more 'strategic' pieces to build up and keep a potential tetris lined up and waiting for that line! Awesome!
