Part of the geek experience is playing with LEGO. I took the bricks for granted, as some people (like Imei) have never played with them at all. This was her first time – caught on tape. Actually, it was caught on Memory Stick.
LEGO is serious business for most of us Geeks. We GET it, you know? You don’t need to have a set of directions, or a particular build in mind. You just dump out your bricks and build whatever is in your mind! It’s almost like a Zen experience for me!
What was your first LEGO experience?

Been playing with Lego since 1977, still have most of the directions for those sets too. I have a mini-fig so old that now he has to sit, his hips are worn out. Keep a few of the nicer ships together now and take pictures of them when I can.

If you want to play with legos AND enrich the lives of youngsters at the same time, get involved with the FIRST Lego League (FLL). From their website:
———-
FIRST LEGO® League
Introduces younger students to real-world engineering challenges by building LEGO-based robots to complete tasks on a thematic playing surface. FLL teams, guided by their imaginations and adult coaches, discover exciting career possibilities and, through the process, learn to make positive contributions to society.
Elementary and middle-school students get to:
– Design, build and program robots using LEGO MINDSTORMS® technology
– Apply real-world math and science concepts
– Research challenges facing today’s scientists
– Learn critical thinking, team-building and presentation skills
– Participate in tournaments and celebrations
What FLL teams accomplish is nothing short of amazing. It’s fun. It’s exciting. And the skills they learn will last a lifetime.

I have been involved with FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) for 6 years now as a judge and a referee at Firs Robotics and First Lego League competitions. FIRST is an organization founded by inventor Dean Kamen and Woodie Flowers in 1989 in order to develop ways to inspire students in engineering and technology fields. The organization is the foundation for the FIRST Robotics Competition, FIRST LEGO League, Junior FIRST Lego League, and FIRST Tech Challenge competitions.
Here is a way you can take your love of Legos and your creative side and use it to better the world. Start a team, volunteer to work an event, assist an existing team, but get involved! You won’t regret it.
