The crusade has ended, as we finally have in our posession the (alleged) best coffee around. It was acquired from Hilo Hatties (located next to the Safeway in Lehei) late last night, in the hopes of a better brew this morning. The “Hawaian Isles Kona Coffee Co.” has Hawaii's finest 100% Kona Coffee – an all purpose grind for all picky coffee drinkers. No other storefront could deliver the flavor that this sealed back can bring. It's in the bathroom, brewing now. Well, it's not exactly *IN* the bathroom – but in the mini room adjoining the bathroom. It's not like they force us to make coffee in the bathtub every day. THAT, my friends, would certainly be funky. Not that we're funky or anything, just that… well, nevermind – it seems that the coffee is done now.

Hawaiian Isles isn't bad coffee, but it's not quite the best either, depending on your tastes at least. Think of Kona coffee the way you might think of microbrew beer or a good cigar. The smaller companies produce in smaller batches to 1) control quality and 2) produce specific features in their coffee. Hawaiian Isles as much better than say starbucks but there are lots of small companies out there with better product, you just have to find them. My current favorite is Komo coffee. It's very smooth and mild to taste, not too oily, just very mellow but with enough caffiene to make the day go by. I am however out of it right now until i can get back to Kona. The company doesn't have a website, I don't remember the phone offhand but you may not even find them on google. Anyhow, I'm currently drinking Llanes Coffee Estate 100% Kona which is very nice. Better than Hawaiian Isles at least. Staring at the bag, you can reach them at 808-322-2770 but you're on Maui so it's long distance.
there are lots of different things that go into it. some places, most mass producers will use chemicals to speed drying and or roasting which can hinder taste. The way in which you roast your coffee makes a difference, as does the grade of coffee bean that it used. Stay away from the peaberry stuff, it's a scam.
