Kicks From High Winds

As promised, here I am in the pitch meeting. Looks as though we may be booking Dan Chan (of DayPop fame). Did you know he used to be a video game designer? What a joystick. Robots, robots, robots. Can't get enough of those robots. Robots make good television. If it's not robotic, it's crap! Deviant Art is a strong possibility, especially since they made some sweet CFH wallpapers for us. Looks as though we could be getting both Tom Gellar and Evan Williams, too. Nothing else on the list looks terribly impressive right now. Then again, I'm tired and ready to go home. A fresh cup of Peet's is about the only thing that could impress me right now. Oh sure, animal gadgets draw eyeballs, but face it: we're in California. If it doesn't involve the word “therapy” and include any soy, then it doesn't get done. Not that I'm bitter or anything.

Sitting to my left is Dan, my (truly) wonderful producer. He's the guy who keeps me on time when I'm doing the show. I always try to run my jokes by him before I do them on the air; he's got a good sense of humor for the most part. Next to him is Roger Chang, a recent addition to our little team. He helps produce some of our more tech-intensive segments. Then, there's Rich, who takes your live calls. Then Ali, who you already know.

Straight across from me is Michelle, who keeps our set of Web pages running smoothly. To the left of her sits Greg, another Web content producer. Then there's Phil. He makes sure that we're not doing anything that might bust our integrity. George is next in line, probably the closest thing we have to a head producer. Paul's usually busy working on The Screen Savers. He's on their set now, natch. Last, but not least (to my immediate right) is Adam. He be the booker.

There are some team members missing, but this gives you a better idea as to who I deal with every weekday. Billy just walked in the door, fresh from the set where he was busy setting up tomorrow's show. That's not an easy task, considering we don't have our own set and are back-to-back with TechLive. Not that I'm complaining. Oh, and here comes Mark – probably one of the most cheerful members of the Call for Help crew. He came on board a couple weeks before I did – which would probably explain our overtly positive attitudes. Actually, I've been slipping into sarcasm more and more with every passing day. Could you tell?

CFH is going to get a face lift soon, I believe. And no, that doesn't mean I'm leaving. It just means that we're going to be infusing more dynamic and portable content into the show. Fun stuff, that's for sure. We have to start capturing people's attention. Not just catching it, but caatching and holding onto it for longer than two minutes. I've got a few tricks up my sleeve. I refuse to be restricted by our past. I'm discovering that it's difficult for people to work around their “it can't be done” instinct. To me, doing something stupid is like second nature.

You know how they have storm chasers? I've always wanted to be a Fog Tracker. You know, going out in the early morning hours and throwing my body into the deadly mist. Nature's fury, man. Some people get their kicks from high winds. Me? I get a rush whenever I can't see my hand two feet in front of my face. It's pure adrenalin, ya know? We used to hunt fog patches all the time back in college. Coming that close to such a low-lying cloud can be quite a life affirming experience, let me tell you. Fog: the silent killer.

Oops. I forgot. I'm in a pitch meeting right now. Better get back to pretending to listen. Meetings really aren't my thing. If I have an idea, I give it to the appropriate person as soon as possible. I don't like extra items hanging out in my inbox. I'm fighting just to keep my eyes open. Quick! Give me something to concentrate on! My cognitive skills are not being challenged. Whatever. I love these people, but I'd rather be doing something else right now. Wink wink. Nudge nudge. Say no more.
