Hi Chris, I’ve lived in Frankfurt for a few years now and if you want to nice day trip without going to far, check out Heidelberg. It’s only an 45min south by train (don’t bother driving, the traffic is terrible because of the fair). View from the castle is nice.

Hi Chirs, I’ve lived in Germany for years and worked/lived in Frankfurt for a few years too. While in Frankfurt I suggest you take Ponzi to the Sachensenhausen suburb, a bit touristy but some great little pubs (Weinstuben) where the tasty local fare of bratwurst and dumplings must be tried with their delicious apple wine (Appfelwein) a Frankfurt specialty. If you have more time in Germany try visiting Berlin, Munich, Cologne, or Dresden, all replete with history and their own charm. The tip on Paris is a good one, but plan on spending a few days there; so much to see! To enjoy a little touch of France not so far from Frankfurt you may want to visit Strasbourg, splendid cathedral there and the joys of alsacien food and wines.

If you end up heading to Brugge, look up Eetcafé Leopold. I was only in Brugge for a day and I spent most of it in there. Only a small café; but with a litre of Stella and some of the best Pancakes in the world it was transformed into heaven.

I even keep the business card that came with the bill in my passport so I can find it again should I ever go to Belgium again.

I just returned from Germany via Frankfurt 10 days ago and while I’ve had a lot of experience flying I’m preaching a new recommendation for long flights.

Aside from the normal getting up, stretching etc… get one of those things at the airport gift shop that go around your neck. Most are like some cute animals but I suspect you sit at a desk as much as I do and can’t afford any possible neck strain or pinched nerve.

Have to concur about Paris too. Amazing city. A trip to Europe would not be complete with out seeing Paris. Check out the catacombs.

If you are looking to get out of the crowd, head for the Rhine Valley. We stayed in a little town called St Goar. That’s the englishized version of the name, can’t remember how it’s actually spelled in German. Tiny little town, but nice to get away to. Lots to do up an down the river, either via boat or train.

Bruges (Brugge) in Belgium is nice little town too. Lots of Medievil architecture. Bit on the touristy side, but lots of shopping and things to do. I highly recommend the Quasimondo bike tours of the city and surrounding area. Great way to see the sites and learn some history of the area. Some of the best beer and chocolate I’ve ever had. Look for the little family run, non commercial, chocolate shops rather then the bigger ones. It’s worth the searching.

I’ve been to Germany just once … also for a huge trade show. Get ready for something completely different … big in-booth lounge areas, models, and smoke … (I hope they’ve banned the indoor smoking) …

Hi Chris, I am a bit stuck here in Hamburg, 5 hrs north from you, being with a 3week baby. I would suggest Berlin, loads of history/baggage there. Closer by would be Cologne, big church there. Frankfurt is actually a pretty small place, mostly dedicated to the financial industry, although to be fair, it seems quite pleasant, from my infrequent trips to head office.

If distance isn’t a problem I’d be inclined to try Berlin or Munich (Munchen). Or maybe Cologne (Koln), which is closer – maybe an hour or 90 minutes by train, although I’ve never been there.

Chris, go to Paris. All women want to go to Paris, have a good meal there, drink good wine, have bread, cheese. Visit a museum? your wife will never forget it. It is really an amazing city. Have fun!

The high speed train takes 4 hours, flights much faster…

This summer i too travles to Deutchland AKA germany. However I had flowen a vary bad airline you are lucky I herd all bit goodthings about that airline. I stayed to see famly and to get back to my roots. However I hope you have a enjoyable trip. I think I herd that Germans are the second most using of computers than US.
