Anyone else remember Captain Picard using an iPad on Star Trek: The Next Generation? It’s something that seemed like a gadget from the far future just a couple of decades ago…
Well, okay. I guess 2013 would have been the far future for sci-fi writers from the 1980s (when TNG started running). To put it in perspective, Blade Runner takes place in 2019 — just six years from when I’m writing this — but when the film was released in 1982, we easily envisioned space colonies and artificial intelligence being commonplace by the time we got to where we are now.
So we have the iPad, but not homicidal replicants roaming the streets of a dying planet. I’m going to count both of those facts as a win for the human race at this point in the 21st century. We’re probably lucky we don’t have access to all of the technology that we can imagine, eh? What technology do you think we’re ready for, and what technology is worth a wait?
