I've Got A Stiffy

  • No related posts

“I'm sure I won't be the only one of your South African subscribers to point out that, in this country, the 5 1/4 inch floppy is referred to as a 'floppy' and the 3½-inch floppy is referred to as a stiffy / stiffie. So, a new PC may be advertised as having, among other things, a 1.44 Meg stiffy drive.” [Conrad Baudin]

“I was interested in your comments about floppy disks and thought you would
be interested in the fact that here in South Africa (as far as I know, the
only place this happens) we call the 3.5 inch floppy a 'stiffy!' I am not
sure how this name came about, but it is in general use and I often have to
remind myself when chatting to people from other parts of the world that
they wouldn't know what I was talking about if I referred to floppies by
that name.” [Ken Garvie]

So, you're telling me that when you yell out, “Hey! Anyone got a 3.5 inch stiffy?” that no one even cracks the slightest bit of a smile?
Weird. :-)
