Who knew there were so many great uses for this stuff? I certainly didn’t, until this top 5 list was sent in! For safety, use rubber gloves and avoid contact with skin and eyes. Isopropyl alcohol can be purchased from large hardware stores, chemists, and even some electronic outlets. Purchasing one which has the label “Safe on most plastics” is advisable, too.
- Removing greasy finger marks from laptops. Dilute the isopropyl alcohol 2:1 with distilled water on a white cloth (important that it’s white, other the color can transfer to the object you’re cleaning). Presto! Finger marks gone! Further, it doubles up to kill any germs that were present on your laptop.
- Cleaning CDs, DVDs Holding the CD from the edges, spray isopropyl alcohol from about 15cm away to achieve a fine mist over the CD. Then, using a soft lint-free white cloth (i.e. not a rough paper towel!), wipe from the center outwards ONLY and continue around the CD until it is complete. This will clean it and keep it in tip-top condition, but there may still be slight surface scratches which are impossible to remove.
- Cleaning computer mouse & keyboard. Using a paper towel or cloth, spray a little into the cloth and apply to a dirty mouse and magic! Clean! Repeat for your keyboard. Try using compressed air spray on and under your keys if it is particularly dirty before cleaning. Remember to test on a small area as some plastics can get gummy from isopropyl alcohol. If in doubt, don’t use. If quite sure, but not certain, dilute with distilled water.
- Cleaning your phone (land and/or cell) In the same manner as for the computer mouse and keyboard, use isopropyl alcohol to sanitize your phones and keep them sparkling. Especially useful for your office phone when you settle into your new cubicle, if you happen to work in an office.
- Removing thermal paste from your CPU In the event that you want to upgrade or switch your CPU in your PC, isopropyl is truly a V.I.P. Spray on CPU and remove all existing thermal paste and wipe clean with a white cloth. Wait to evaporate dry, and then apply fresh thermal paste and install new CPU. In this case, make sure you use 99.7% or greater concentration of isopropyl alcohol.
- BONUS TIP! You can also use it to remove hair spray and wax marks and misc. stains from your mirrors at home.
- BONUS, BONUS TIP! For the truly health-conscious, you can carry around a small spray bottle and use it to sanitize shopping trolley handles, public bathroom seats, etc.
