Is Your Head – or Your Computer – in the Cloud?
Everywhere you turn, there’s someone talking about Cloud Computing lately. Let’s face it – it’s a hot concept. However, there is a large difference of opinion as to what Cloud Computing even means, much as there is with “Web 2.0″. To some, Cloud Computing is simply another term for virtually anything you do on the Internet. To others, it’s more specifically virtual servers. It gets fuzzy when you try to nail down a full description of what Cloud Computing really is.
To me, Cloud Computing is simply anything I can do online, instead of having to rely on software on my computer. There are full applications available now that cover everything from picture editing to paper writing to handling your taxes… and it’s all done from within your browser. How much easier can it get to simply go to a website and do what you need to do, instead of having to buy and install software, make sure it’s compatible with your system and other software, launch the program every time… you get where I’m going. Cloud Computing, by my definition at least, just makes life so much simpler.
How do you define Cloud Computing, and what are your thoughts on the whole thing?
- The Microsoft and Digital River upgrades are causing much customer confusion.
- Even Geeks need healthy skin and hair.
- Outlook has opened up to the World.
- What are you going to dress up as for Halloween?
- What happened when The Blade took the plunge and upgrade his laptop to Windows 7?
- Could open-source bring transparency to the White House?
- Are normal commercials turning into infomercials?
- Check out the hottest new apps and software, at excellent prices.
- Recover and restore your deleted emails… at no cost!
- Is someone stealing your child’s identity?
- What brand of motherboard do you recommend, and why?
- San Fransisco is set to host the Academy Awards of Clean Technology.
- If you don’t have a fast Internet connection, why not check out Opera Turbo? 3 million others are using it.
I keep a fairly close eye on the programs we feature every day on our downloads page. There are some excellent pieces of software there – even a few I found I can no longer live without!

I think the whole concept is scary. If you do everything “online”, then we’ve basically lost that thing we call privacy. Kind of like how every application on your computer right now has to “phone home” everyday for updates. Back in the era of Win95/WIn98 this didn’t happen.

Now here is a concept that I don’t believe would work as well as some hope. I agree things like Google Docs have potential and will launch quicker in the future. It might replace the traditional word processor.
But I would not like an OS that is run on the Internet. There are always ways to get into stuff, more easily if it open to everyone, even with security and what not, someone somewhere along the line will find some way to hack into someone personal files. I want a HD OS that I can use when I want to write something personal. An OS should be on the hard drive, and the Internet should stay seperate from and OS.
Here is my 2 cents for now. God damn, I could go on for weeks on this topic, but I am going to stop here, and perhaps I will write something on this myself and make it the base for an improved site….
Who knows we will see what happens.
