The technology behind sound masking came out of the realization by scientists and engineers that “oral privacy” is actually a simple matter of making speech unintelligible. That is, if each of us can’t understand what the other is saying, we have effectively established oral privacy – even though we may still be able to see and, to some extent, hear each other.

White noise is a little too harsh for me. Pink noise is about the same but a little bit easier on the ears.

Hey Chris!
White noise is good if there is nothing else of a more natural sound available.

It \;s funny that you bring this up now because I was going to send you an email about my site, http://www.oregoncoastescapes.com. It is nothing but video scenes of the Southern Oregon Coast. Some people consider this the ultimate “white noise” considering the audio on these shots was acquired with a STEREO shotgun mic, the quality is quite good. Many scenes even have a foghorn in the background.

Too many loud concerts have left me with the permanent sound of multiple tones in my ears. They not too bad during the day, but at night they are very intrusive. A white noise machine has replaced the frequently malfunctioning fan I use to cover up these sounds when I try to sleep. Now I can’t leave home without it and have a multi voltage unit that has gone around the world with me and works anywhere except a campground without electricity.

I tried to do this the other night… fell right asleep then the g/f woke me up and told me to turn it off. I am guessing that it doesn’t work for her

White noise seems to fade away into the background. It can be nice to dull out the sounds around us. We have grown so accustomed to sounds that we do not realize they are there. It is only when we shut off the computer, or go on vacation, we realize how many constants are around us. When I go to bed, I usually have music, or something playing in the background. It is almost like a distraction so my mind does not wonder.
