Is This how you Set up Your Webcam?

Yes, I’m sitting in the dark. I don’t understand why so many people record without turning on regular lights… expecting the glow from their monitors to outline them. I’ve got a top five list on how to set up your webcam for maximum recording power. This was sent in by Flyaxe.
- Location Make sure that you set up your webcam on a horizontal surface like a bookshelf. Set it up so it points straight at your face, or at the location/desk you are at. If you are using it outside, you have to keep it in a dry spot and prevent direct sunlight from hitting it.
- Lightning For most webcams, you will need a lot of light. Because I don’t know what webcam you are using, you have to experiment a bit on yourself. Don’t use to little or too much light! If you have too little light in the room, the video quality will be decreased and make you look like dark red or dark yellow. Remember not to use too much light, because then you will be all discolored looking, and you will be all light yellow.
- Distance Keep a good enough distance from your face/desk or whatever, so the viewer gets a good view. If you are too close, you will lose light and quality on the video/stream. If you are too far away, the viewer will see your unclean room and that is not good is it?
- Treatment Don’t put your webcam on a dirty spot or a bookshelf with a lot of dust. Keep it dry, prevent too much heat and direct sunlight (which can effect the lens). I also heard that old televisions can affect the webcam. I don’t know if this is true, but keep it in mind.
- Software If your webcam doesn’t come with very good software, I suggest getting some! Webcam software can be a great help, and can also be a lot of fun. Programs like Webcam max (for Windows) and Cam Twist (for the Mac) are great programs. With these programs, you can use effects like dancing aliens and chat windows.

Remember you don’t need the most expensive light, you just need one pointed on you.

Wow!, This really helped me I’ve been looking all over the net to make better quality because my videos are VERY grainy. Just one tip to other people who have a external iSight there is two options to get better lighting, First there is The Griffin SightLight for about $35 or to go to the cheap route get a lamp in the place you are recording then, get a program called iGlasses it tweaks the isights exposure and other settings. But Thank You! ( :

I would presume by “Older TV” we are talking vacuum tube TV sets. Those throw off a bunch of EM. Also CRTs tend to throw up a decent amount of EM due to the whole electro magnet in the back of the picture tube. I don’t have that issue with my webcam but I’ve run a mic cable around a CRT and gotten a significant signal lose as a result.

A really cool video that I hope should help alot of people to understand the importance of correctly I hate it when your watching a Ustream and you see in the background some one walking or doing something in the room and it distracts from what the main subject is doing. the tips about the lighting and the placement was great. I am in the process of laying out my stream. This will help thanks

This is definitely a great post. I’ve seen so many streams that have the worst lighting or placement.
One tip I’d give is that if you’re pointing it towards you and at a TV that you want the viewers to be able to see, that you use sunglasses in front of the camera for older TVs or try to use a newer TV like an LCD or Plasma one.

There is another Freeware webacm software for windows called SuperWebCam. Works great and using both ManyCam and SuperWebCam together you can get some great effects. Camtwist and WebCam Max have great development though both of the free applications claim that they are working on updates.

Thanks a lot Chris! I see a lot of streams on ustream that have their webcams at weird angles and have almost no light in the room (they do their shows at night). I have a clip-on webcam for my notebook and haven’t been able to put it to much use, but I think I might use your tips to start making some Youtube videos. Thanks alot!
By the way, I like the effects; especially the cube. I really wish there is a Camtwist for Windows. I can’t wait till a get a Mac Mini.

When I started streaming, I always had angle and lighting issues. I actually resorted to Scotch-taping the webcam to the wall! Not fun at all!

If you don’t want to clean your room, use a backdrop. Or just shove it all off camera.

The one that winds me up no end is people who waffle on and on and on, and refuse to get to the point. not only is this a waste of my time, but also of my precious download limit, only for them to finally make a point that usually doesn’t have any point to it at all anyway. That and people who move their cam to get something else in shot, but don’t hold the camera still to let the viewer focus on what their trying to show them.

Good one Chris! Good tips. I think we are all tired of seeing the videos/streams starring the blue smurf with dirty underwear on the floor pigging out on a hamburger(please pause your stream or video when pigging out). lol. I favorited this one on my youtube, maybe some of the “smurfs” will see it. lol. e-ya later!
