Yes, I’m sitting in the dark. I don’t understand why so many people record without turning on regular lights… expecting the glow from their monitors to outline them. I’ve got a top five list on how to set up your webcam for maximum recording power. This was sent in by Flyaxe.

  • Location Make sure that you set up your webcam on a horizontal surface like a bookshelf. Set it up so it points straight at your face, or at the location/desk you are at. If you are using it outside, you have to keep it in a dry spot and prevent direct sunlight from hitting it.
  • Lightning For most webcams, you will need a lot of light. Because I don’t know what webcam you are using, you have to experiment a bit on yourself. Don’t use to little or too much light! If you have too little light in the room, the video quality will be decreased and make you look like dark red or dark yellow. Remember not to use too much light, because then you will be all discolored looking, and you will be all light yellow.
  • Distance Keep a good enough distance from your face/desk or whatever, so the viewer gets a good view. If you are too close, you will lose light and quality on the video/stream. If you are too far away, the viewer will see your unclean room and that is not good is it?
  • Treatment Don’t put your webcam on a dirty spot or a bookshelf with a lot of dust. Keep it dry, prevent too much heat and direct sunlight (which can effect the lens). I also heard that old televisions can affect the webcam. I don’t know if this is true, but keep it in mind.
  • Software If your webcam doesn’t come with very good software, I suggest getting some! Webcam software can be a great help, and can also be a lot of fun. Programs like Webcam max (for Windows) and Cam Twist (for the Mac) are great programs. With these programs, you can use effects like dancing aliens and chat windows.
