Is the iPhone a Good PDA?

Robert is a regular viewer of our videos, who happens to be a very busy man. He relies heavily on his iCalendar in order to stay organized. Overall, Robert is happy with his iPhone, but laments some loss of functionality for him. He likens the iPhone to a “super sexy secretary who isn’t very good at her job”. Keep in mind those are his words, not mine. Here are his top 5 things he’d like to see Apple improve to make the iPhone a better PDA.

  • Speed Compared to other devices, the iPhone is just slow. It takes 7-8 seconds for the phone to ‘wake up’ and open the Calendar feature. This is just inacceptable.
  • Copy/paste functionality When Robert meets with a client, he enters the date and specific notes about the meeting. Each time, he has to retype the same information over and over, since he cannot do a simple copy/paste.
  • More iCalendar capabilities He wonders why we can’t have the real iCalendar installed on the iPhone. He wants the ability to drag and drop appointments. Robert also wasn’t aware that you can change the calendar view from daily to weekly or even monthly. Lucky for him, I showed him how. Strike one small thing off his wish list.
  • Connectivity between contacts and appointments Robert wishes to be able to open a contact, and make an appointment from there. He also thinks that notes within that contact area should be hyperlinked to other information about them.
  • Moving of Email This isn’t really PDA related, but it is annoying. Ever notice how if you try to move an Email from the trash bin back to the Inbox… it simply disappears? It’s no longer in either place. It’s just gone. Not very cool, is it?

Excellent list, Robert. Who knows? Even if Apple doesn’t step up and answer some of your wishes, a third party may. Very soon, there will be a SDK (Software Development Kit) coming soon from Apple. This will allow developers to create more things for the iPhone.

Editing to add another Top 5 ways to improve the iPhone, sent in by another community member!

Okay Chris, I had to send in a top 5 list. The Iphone is a truly unique device, however here are my top 5 improvements for it.

  • Copy and Paste Feature. How could this basic computer function be missing? I used it a lot when I emailed from my blackberry, Apple should add this simple computer function to the next version.
  • No MMS built in? A BIG oversight by apple. It’s a big hassle to picture message anyone. There are work arounds using email to phone email addresses, but when using a phone as media rich as the iPhone, MMS should have been present, no doubt.
  • GPS Feature. Almost all new phones have the GPS built in now, the Iphone does not. Now, the google maps function is really great, but many users long for GPS. For me, it don’t make much different, but it would be nice to have.
  • Video Capture. Another thing Apple overlooked when releasing the Iphone, was video capture. The camera, despite not having a flash, works very well, however I would love to be able to take videos on the next iPhone.
  • Storage!!! At only 8Gigs, the iPhone forces me to leave about 500 songs at home, along with half of my podcasts. Now, the reason I went to iphone was to “Combine” my Ipod and Blackberry into one device, but I don’t like being choosy about the music that goes on my iPhone. With Ipods now at 80gig, why don’t the Iphone have more storage, or AT LEAST a way to add external storage?

That’s my top five list, I figured I would send you one since you ask for them so much ;) The iPhone is a great phone, and I am proud to have it, however like EVERYTHING else, it’s not perfect, so these are my top 5 improvements. There are more than 5 if you really want to picky, but these are in my opinion, the most significant.

I lust after an iPhone. But, sadly, ATT does not serve the vast wasteland where I live. OPEN THE iPHONE, Apple, and watch your sales grow. (At least by one.)

its rumored that in a few months there will be an update that will make the iphone able to record video

Ugh! So expensive in canada! I pay 25$ and get 3mb. Someone needs to sue them for price gouging. You know, of all the westernized world, we pay many times the average price for data? It is outrageous.

My wife and I just had a race – my iPhone against here Treo 680. (BTW we tried it several times, once with the standard Treo menu and once with Initiate just to make sure there wasn’t a bias caused by 3rd party software.) In every case I was entering a calendar event before her and in every case I finished well ahead of her too. So much for unacceptable.

Copy and Paste, agreed. And shortcuts too. It would be nice to have more capabilities in Address Book and iCal. But lets not forget that this is version 1 whereas other smart phones have had numerous iterations to improve their feature set.

This is a comment about your new Lockergnome email design. In a word, it sucks. The type is not only the size of the print on the back of a legal document, it is also the same light gray color. I can’t even read it (I have a 24 inch monitor running at 1900×1200 resolution. And, yes, I do have very good eyesight (I just had an exam a couple weeks ago and with the corrected prescription I could read the bottom line of the eye chart and thus my doctor said I have 20-10 vision with the prescription). But reading your email newsletter makes my eyes bleed. And the font itself is lousy – some letter combinations touch each other and others have too much space between them. The color scheme is just plain boring.

I am a publisher/editor/writer and have been for 40 years, as well as an artist and have designed, produced and published hundreds of books and magazines during that time. So I’m not some nut job with a rant. I do know what I’m talking about. If you wanted to drive away subscribers, you couldn’t have done much more to accomplish that with yur newsletter redesign.

I’ve used the iPod Touch as a pseudo-PDA over the past couple of days, and while it works in a pinch, it’s a pain compared even to a 10-year-old PalmPilot. I expect the SDK will help remedy that, but I wouldn’t consider either the iPhone or the iPod Touch ready for prime time in that department so far. The hardware could certainly handle it — reading text is great, and even typing on the screen keyboard isn’t bad — but the software isn’t even in the PDA ballpark. Yet.

Slow? Everything else, OK but slow? i begg to differ

lol the iphone is a dumb blonde

WTFREAK! i got the MDA vario IT TAKES ME A MINUTE (sometimes half) TO OPEN A TEXT!! AGES TO SAVE A CONTACT!!! my brother got the iphone, apart from utube, BOOM eveything come ONE TIME!

I would probably use the iPhone as my PDA after this…

Given the fact that it’s the first phone of it’s kind, I think it’s done quite outstanding. Regardless of how good of a product it might be, people will always find shortcomings.

i agree…but the phone is capable of so much more so we can only hope for software updates i guess

you see if it keeps getting better i might buy one…untill then nokia e61i

Chris. Great video clip. Gracias.

I agree, because i don’t have an iPhone but i agree with you that it is slow, the iphone is a good iPod and a good Phone but not a PDA.

Apple coined the name PDA when they introduced the Newton.

IDK… I love my iPhone and use it like my old iPaq PDA. I love my iPhone, but then again, it does lack somethings, like Flash, and copy-paste. If Apple could only fix a few of the early problems promptly, they could easily sell more iPhones. I think the Flash ordeal is just holding the iPhone back. But that’s just my two cents.

I have a Palm TX and I love it. It does everything I want and more. I can’t believe that you can’t cut’n'paste on an Iphone. Yes the interface looks like a win 3.1 throw back, but at least you can change it. Even make it look like an Iphone. Plus the IR port is great for replacing all of your TV, Hi-Fi etc remotes.

i heard there will also be spotlight search functionality

the iphone is really gorgeous and nice, though now they have the ipod touch.

I don’t have a lot of events loaded, but my iphone is at ready in calander in about 1.5 seconds from out of my pocket–definatley not slow.. (try a reboot..) copy and paste.. I’ll tell you.. I can’t beleive it’s not there.. would be great to be able to email a segment of paragraph off the web.. correct a malformed url link from an email.. etc.. EXTREMELY annoying.. BUT.. having come from a treo 300, treo 600, treo 650, g1000, T2032, simens tmobile pocket-pc.. I’ll tell you.. this iphone is amazing.. view pdf’s from an email, word and xls documents.. web surfing=amazing. This thing needs a few more months for the developers (3rd party) to catch up and it will trump every device of it’s kind.. there will be no more doubters left.. I was a doubter.. my buddy got one.. the 650 was on ebay the next day and my $349 iphone (refurb section on apple.com) was on it’s way. Unlocked and on tmobile in about 20 min out of the box (sorry ATT, your service doesn’t cut the mustard in my area..)

Another list of things that were overlooked.. (or left out to annoy and force people to buy iphone2)
bluetooth data connectivity..
stereo bluetooth (DUH!)
camcorder function.. (again, 3rd party app I’m sure is around the corner)

I’m BIG on youtube.. so.. I would have easily paid $350 for this thing if it were just called ‘the youtube gadget’ the vids look MUCH better in h.264 and this thing 12″ from your face is like 42″ lcd on the wall..

Emailing on this thing–amazing.. if you’re not writing a book, the on screen keypad is just fine and it’s also 1 thumb-able more than any other of its kind. I rarely read emails on my laptop anymore–even when it’s a few feet away..

EVERY gadget is lacking in some way.. but few have as much potential.

iPORN…. lol i like it!!!

Yes, the advantage of iPhone is that they can invent features as they go, and we can get them for free!

the new iCrap now in stores!

yeah, but in the words of cnet’s Donald Bell:

“The iPod touch looks like the iPhone’s strategically less-attractive wingman. Sure it’s lighter and skinnier, but it just doesn’t feel as good in the hand or turn as many heads on the street.”

What Do You Think?
