Is .Mac Worth Buying?

On Feb 1st, I opened up the phone lines. One of the questions I received was “Is .Mac really worth having?” I personally have .Mac, and I feel it’s worth it more at $60 than when it was over $100.00.
If you don’t have your own website, or need extra hosting… then yes, you should get a .Mac subscription. If you want to take advantage of a limited amount of sharing, or have web storage… then yes, it’s worth it. To me, I think the Remote Desktop feature is less important. However, think about it from the point of an average user. Being able to connect to your Mac at home from anywhere in the World is an amazing feature for most people.
Basically, you need to weigh the cost of the service against what all you’ll get for the price. Will you use the services offered? Are they things that you actually need? If so, then you should think about getting yourself a subscription. However, if you honestly don’t think you’ll use any of those features… why spend the money?

I give 3 stars, worth watching but i have to disagree on the whole “mac-software” thing.
my reasons are because if they get too popular i wont be able to use command prompt at school =p.
other than that i got nothing

If you have 2+ Macs, then it’s probably worth it, mainly for the syncing features. The photo gallery is nice, especially with the integration with iPhoto, but I would rather use a service like Flickr.

I’m glad you are opening up the lines again! I am kinda getting fed up of those top 5 lists, even though they were helpful, they are too frequent.

“Is windows live better” no idea since I’ve never used .mac and the only thing about windows live services I use is live messenger, lol.
However, after paying like 2grand for a computer, the least apple could do is give you .mac for free.
There is nothing .mac does that I can’t do using services available for free everywhere.

WHat I think it is worth is the $70 you can find it from discounters for….
Syncing is what makes it for me. The ability to sync information easily between my multiple Macs at work and home is indispensable. I change anything anywhere, and it instantly propagates to all my machines and my iPhone….
Could not live without that anymore

If you only have one mac I don’t think it is worth it. However, having two macs, it is worth it to me just for the syncing features. It is nice to just open my laptop after not having used it for a month and my bookmarks and passwords and everything be updated.

Didn’t realise just how big Chris’ office is! He’s got desks all over the place, and that yellow flooring looks spanky (not a real word I know!). Is Pirillo a millionaire?

.mac should be free. I own a .mac a/c and i have 2 macs. I like .mac. I will pay for it again. The web gallery here in europe is very (painfully) slow, but apple promise they are looking into this problem. If the web gallery is still slow in a few years time i may give up paying for .mac. I hear the web gallery in the usa is fast.

.MAC is actually STILL $100. Chris thought it was $70, because when you buy a mac, you can get it for 70.

What do you mean by. “it’s worth it more at $60 than when it was over $100.00.”? I’m still pay $99 and Apples web site says it’s $99.

I bought a dotmac account when I first got my mac. I now have bootcamp installed and still use my mac email address. It’s expenisve, in the UK it’s £70 a year, the email service is good but I don’t use the extra features like web hosting etc.

I’ve thought about this quite a bit. I’ve had a .mac account for about 7 or so years? The renewal always sneaks up on me and then I just go with it. However, I do believe that it is no longer worth it to me. I don’t use iweb, the online storage, and have found the .mac mail spam filters to be sorely lacking, which is a primary reason for me to migrate over to (free) gmail.
