Is Mac OS X Leopard Better than Apple’s Tiger?

I had someone call in tonight on the 888-PIRILLO line to ask me whether Leopard is so much better than Tiger that it is worth paying for the upgrade. He asked “is it extremely better… is it worth $120.00?”.
Is it worth the money? YES. Is it “extremely better”? I wouldn’t say that. However, the incremental improvements definitely make it worth the cost. There have been a few issues that have been raised with certain applications on Leopard.
He also asked me if the new features on Leopard are “cool”. Yes, they are. It was worth it for me to upgrade, for sure. My system is actually faster with Leopard than it was with Tiger. That was shocking and unbelievable. With Windows… I always dreaded upgrading an OS… knowing it would likely make my system slower. To have an OS that is actually faster with each new OS is refreshing.
The best feature in my mind is Time Machine. Time Machine uses a unique interface that turns the rather boring task of backing up and restoring files into something that you may actually enjoy doing. And you may not even have to think too much about the “backing up” portion of the exercise—according to Apple, Leopard will automatically back up your files as you work.
The next caller asked about the Sony PSP software. I happen to think it is pretty much crap. The caller wanted to argue, saying that the software for Vegas is great. I reminded him that Sony didn’t make Vegas… they acquired it. To me, it’s quite smart for companies to buy software and refine it for themselves, instead of creating something from scratch. Why reinvent the wheel?

i am sorry i ever purchased Leopard and upgraded to Tiger. This thing is utterly silly and offers no grand improvements over Tiger. In many ways, it is appallingly ugly compared to Tiger, not to mention all the haxies that it breaks. My biggest beaf was stacks, but that has been fixed withe the Leopard 10.5.2 updater, but the ugly finder sidebar remains and there is now no way to get rid of it as you could in Leopard. i can’t understand, for the life of me, why Apple screwed with that! i utterly hate Leopard.

You think mac’s are overpriced? OS X Leopard = $129
Vista Ultimate = $400.
Not to mention Vista has 1/2 the features, and is a poor copy of OS X. And the fact that most OEM’s build poorly designed, poorly built, poorly thought out crap. Apple spend billions on design and innovation, there is where the price mark up comes from.

Just to prove my statement before my last one, name one innovation Microsoft has had in the past 5 years. Whereas I can name loads, Apple has had off my head. iPhone (say what you want about it, but it is a revolutionary phone, overpriced or not). Time Machine. Dashboard. Spotlight. ETC. Please check your facts so you can make an honest comparison.

Here’s the definition of Innovation:
1.the act of introducing something new: something newly introduced
2. the introduction of something new.
3. a new idea, method or device.
4.change that creates a new dimension of performance Peter Drucker (Hesselbein, 2002)
5.the process of making improvements by 6.introducing something new…

I once heard, “Saying this Apple was first out with many many things. But to say Microsoft just copied is mostly crazy. MS is allowed to be late but still be innovative, even though the public will just say, “Oh yeah seen it some where else,” and “good thing they finally added that.” This constance war is just wearing on those of us in the middle of it. Time to let it go and move on. You take your OS and I will take mine. “

My mac is slower with 10.5. A 1.6 mini with 2gigs of ram. And I got a wonder problem with the mail app not remembering my password that still isn’t fixed after 10.5.2. I am not impressed.

Rubbish, OS X does not install straight out of the box, you need to download a hacked version, and it runs like crap compared to on a mac.

I see a lot of comments about innovation. But lets not forget both Microsoft AND Apple stole the whole GUI operating system from Xerox. Yes thats right folks BOTH MICROSOFT AND APPLE STOLE THE GUI FROM XEROX. Apple just beat Microsoft to the punch with the Apple LISA and the LISA Operating system. I have owned an Apple LISA, yes they were cool when they came out but were not what I call innovative. I’d call it stolen, or should I say borrowed.
Oh, lets not forget that BeOS and Mac OS X are both decendents from NeXT’s NeXtStep. Well technicaly Mac OS X is based on OpenStep but basicly the same thing. That’s not what I call innovative. I’d call it stolen, or should I say borrowed.
If you want to argue about what operating system is better then I think you should try them all before you can say one is better than the other.
I am typing this post on an iBook G4 with MAC OSX. I also own a couple Sun Microsystem Workstations with SUN OS. Among my collection of computers is an iMac with UBUNTU Linux. A Quad Xeon with Microsoft Windows 2003 Server. A Dual Pentium with Windows 2000 Advanced Server, a laptop with Windows XP Pro. A Dual Athlon with Windows Vista Ultimate. A Pentium III with Vista Home Premium. A Pentium 4 with XP Pro.
If you want me to tell you witch operating system is better I can’t because they all serve a purpose and have advantages. Windows has advantages over OSX, OSX has advantages over Windows. And Unix/Linux has advantages over Windows and OSX.
If you want to say that Apple has better hardware than a PC then I would say you never built your own PC or owned Sun Microsystem equipment.
Bottom line…
If you like MAC then use a MAC
If you like PC then use a PC
if you like Linux then use Linux
And one more note…
If PC hardware is so bad then why did both Apple and Sun Microsystems switch to the x86 platform?
