Is Home Inventory Delicious?
Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed
Ever wish you had an inventory of all your games, software, DVDs, CDs and books? Well, you can easily create one – using a webcam and your computer!
If you have a Mac (and who doesn’t these days), you likely already know that Delicious Library 2 was just released. With it running, you simply hold up a barcode to the camera lens – and seconds later, Delicious Library will scan Amazon for that media and automatically import the information and box shot into a virtual shelf. Use it for books, movies, music, software, toys, tools, electronics, video games, etc. Just about anything with a barcode, really (just about anything in Amazon’s index, really).
You can also easily keep track of which things you lend out to what friends, publish your library to the Web (or view it on your iPod), and… okay, maybe I’m getting a little excited about it.
If it sounds boring, you should try it for yourself. And if you don’t have OS X, then there’s a lousy (but free) knock-off for Windows called Libra. In my opinion, it doesn’t come close to the power and presentation of Delicious Library.
Still, with programs like these, why aren’t you keeping track of your things already?
Post update! I received the following email from Steven:
I’m not sure if you’ve noticed this yet, but if you scan anything related to Star Wars, it says “I am your father” in a creepy voice. I did it with the video games, but not the movies. We all know that if you don’t own anything about Star Wars you’re not a geek.

Dang dude this will be pretty dang useful especially when you get jacked. I mean you have all you stuff inventoried. They should have bar codes for every thing like computer cases, monitors television and stuff. I would put everything I own on there. But keep the list somewhere else just in case my computer gets jacked. Which will suck and god forbid that happens to anyone. My friend got robbed when they were away and couldn’t get everything that was missing something like this is good to have.

If I remember correctly there was a USB device created in the late 90’s or early 00’s that read Barcodes I think it via Radioshack and was a hand held laser scanner that took you to the manufacturer’s website. Great to see this tech taking on different aspects.

i think this is a greattt idea because i let ppl borrow alot of my stuff books.. movies.. games and sometimes if they have it for awhile i forget who i gave it to or if i even had it at some point so this would be a great tool or if you had alot of these kind of things and you got robbed then you would know exactly what was missing so i think software like this is definitely a plus if you have the time and the energy to sit and put everything into the library ..:-)

My dad works for a company that deals with wireless computers. More specifically, mobile PCs on Ford trucks and inventory scanners. This means we have tons of scanners and pocket pcs stacked up at our house, and I am usually given a fraction of what he doesn’t need anymore.
So, I guess I’m already good to go with this new piece of software, I’ll try it out later to day. It’ll have to be Libra however, one because I do not have a Mac and two because I don’t believed DL supported scanners.

I think that this is an awesome idea. How many times do you need something and not remember if you have it or not… Just scan in every thing you have and when you go looking for it you know that you have it and if you can put in the location of that item that would be even better! As Chris said this is priceless in a natural disaster if you lose every thing and need to show the insurance company what you had it will give them a list of everything. I am defiantly going to buy this software!

I my self haven’t really worried about forgetting things and i haven’t loaned my stuff that often anyways but i quess in the future where work load starts to come and i’m going to get more busy then i might consider this thing important because a lot of things fly by and a little reminder is always a help.

I am loving Libra right now. So much that I took out all the DVDs in the case (which doesn’t cover even half of the collection) and scanned them all with an old Intel webcam I had laying around. It’s nice to catalog what you have in your collection if, like me, your’re about to move and need to know what all you have and what all you’re missing. Never hurts to have something to go back on.

This seems like a good idea for those who need such a tool… me, I just keep everything valuable in a fire proof safe that is extremely indestructible and impossible to carry. I don’t have too many things of great monetary value laying around, they all go in the safe… the only thing I have of extreme value that I can’t put in the safe is my wife, but she carries a .38 revolver… so I don’t worry too much.

That is very very cool, Chris. I am a total neat-freak/OCD person, and this software is just brilliant! My family is always loosing things, so I hope that this software will solve a few issues! The method of scanning and tracking inventory looks more sophisticated than my work’s…..?!
But we all need to remember; this does no good unless things are actually physically organized.
Anyways, sweet software! I’ll have to try it out.

Those of you who know me, or have been reading my posts here on Chris’s blog, likely know already that I am a big fan and supporter of Space Jock software: http://www.spacejock.com. This is where I got my first taste of cataloging software, with BookDB. Well, for what is perhaps the first time, I have to say I’ve found something better. The idea that you can scan in items by bar code and not be forced to do all that tedious typing is just wonderful. Though libra might want to watch out, because from my own personal experience I can tell you that as soon as space jock’s creator gets wind of something new and interesting in the way of possibilities, he’ll be working hard to make sure his software can keep up.

This looks like the most fun way to keep track of all your stuff, and I LOVE the idea of having a check-in, check-out feature!
When I’m at school, I usually try to keep inventory of all my books and media in an excel spreadsheet. It’s not as cool or as effective as Delicious Library, but it works for me!
Shaina

I never thought of that. I guess I don’t really think about being robbed either (but I have been in the past). When I first started reading this post though I thought “naw… that just takes too much time in general… and I barely have enough time now to do this.” But after reading some of the reasons why it’s good to have a list like this, it kinda makes sense I suppose.
But really, as Seinfeld said, “Everything you buy is just walking its way to the trash can.” Heck, if someone else is going to use it more than me… *shrugs shoulders* most of my stuff is just sitting around the house anyways. :) If someone else feels the need to have it so much that they’re willing to steal it… I just hope they put it to good use… but I know that’s never the case.
Kind Regards,
-Shaina

This idea is a pretty good idea. Does it just recognize bar codes, or does it recognize serial numbers too, because instead of writing down the serial numbers on all of my hardware, I could possibly scan it in, so then it saves me having to open the case, and getting it, Which would be a huge time saver.

wow, turning a webcam into a bar code reader might be useful for keeping things in line, ut it may also assist in things like e-bay sales. If all the sellers were able to scan their products into the system via barcode, and use he same webcam to get a picture, it could make displaying one’s products that much easier.

Delicious Library is really cool: with the barcode scanner and everything. I think David Pogue did a video about this where he scanned in basically everything in his house. While it does look useful and amazing, which it is, by the time you get it all catalogued, there’s not much you can do with it. Maybe that’s just me, but I really don’t use it now. The initial experience is still pretty fun.
I’m also not the auction-everything-in-your-house-you-can’t-use type, so yeah, not much there for me either.

Chris-
Thank you SO much for pointing out Libra, that is exactly the freeware the wife and I have been in need of. She has a movie obsession, so we have almost 500 dvd’s and 200+ vhs tapes that she tracks through an excel spreadsheet – functional I suppose but clunky and no where near as practical.
Libra will be great, big thanks!

I’m always losing stuff to people I lend things to.. This would be such a great thing to have.
Not only just to protect your things, but to serve as a quick lookup for anything you got in case you need it, or think you don’t have it and want to get it.. Check the list! Oh i’ve already got it! No need to waste another $22 on that new CD release and having duplicate cds. Money saved.

So, essentially someone could harness this kind of technology and use this indexing system to ……set up an online storefront? Come up with some kind of code that would actually represent the store in this visual representation. So that people could not only shop at your online storefront, but actually see your products on shelves like they are in the store. And then you could add some kind of active search so that when you start typing, things start disappearing from the shelves dependent upon what you’re typing. Wouldn’t that be awesome? Or do they already have that somewhere…

This truly is software for the obsessive compulsive. I tried it, and as it is cool to have a bar code scanner in your computer, I don’t think I have a need for it. What will your friends think of you when they say “Hey, can I borrow this book?” and you’re like “WAIT! Let me scan it out first. Okay, here you go; it’s due back by the 16th. I charge 10 cents for every day it’s overdue!”

I was watching the live stream before you recorded this, it seemed like a pretty cool piece of software. Lucky that it’s on Windows, too. I think I’ll go and download the trial now! It won’t be long before I’m asked to register it, I’d be obsessed with it. What are we like, haha.
To the comment who mentioned what would your friends think of you if you said “Let me scan it first”: It can be scanned anytime, hell, even if you have to do it in front of your friend, who cares?!
The only thing I need is a new webcam, the one I have now works, but I’ve had it for a good… long time. Your blog posts are always interesting to read! Thanks for the info Chris!

I’m a big open source fan, but could never find an inventory system that I liked using and supported the webcam barcode features and whatnot (which are very convenient, but not perfect). I ended up buying DVDPedia (http://www.bruji.com/dvdpedia/) after researching a bunch of the options. No, it doesn’t do books, cd, games, and the like (there are other _Pedias to do those), but it does movies extremely well, instead of doing everything just alright.

Hey chris, I found this post quite interesting. I have reviewed a few sites/products out there already that have this sort of thing going on. How useful they can be! Although i am a pc user, i liked your imput on this product. I decided to comment because i have thought of some other uses for it and pros.
1. you can have your own personal library and charge people to become a member.
2. you can keep track of just the books you read, and not all the books you own. This can be helpful when you are looking for books you haven’t read. Such as, you can scan your list, and find a book and notice you haven’t yet read the sequel.
3. Great organization feature! It may help you keep things in order around your house too.
There are many different things you can use this for.
Although, i have a question chris. Can it just do Books,CDs, Dvds and other media? or can you imput other things like jewelry and stuff, then save the upc code so that when you scan it again, it will come up? anyway, nice product. I love when you do those reviews on things like this. Verrrrry Helpful :) THX AGAIN!

Well I don’t know about you guys but I used to have so much fun with those old tape labeller gadgets. I can see barcoding being an extension of that.
I do have to admit though that a webcam will never be accurate enough for ’serious’ archiving as it is reliant on picture quality which will function in a spmwhat analog manner. An infra red beam set up for this purpose will be so much more reliable, Definately for fun, rather than a serious tool.

If you have absolutely no cash but some computer skills, you can also be a DIY inventory person. Python is a really awesome programming language (also recommended for beginners to “real” coding) which will easily do this for you. All you have to do is create and run the program! The best news? Python’s interface is free, user friendly, and completely documented. You will likely be able to find step by step instructions for this particular code sequence right online if you are not familiar with the language! I did it this way, and it as awesome!

This software is quite interesting. I think it would be amazing if you could access the content of the media that you’re cataloging. For example, a PDF of the a book that you’ve scanned. Obviously, you wouldn’t be able to play a video game that you’ve scanned, but what about photos, videos, reviews or cheat codes? That could be useful. Maybe just provide all sorts of information about the media. What do you think?

I suppse it would be helpful if your house burnt down…I wouldn’t know because it’s never happened to me, but from my current standing point, I would think the things that are worth more (e.g. TV, computer, washing machine, etc.) would be the priority over the small stuff like books and CD’s. Personally, I probably wouldn’t use it, because if I don’t have that much things to keep track of. Even if I did, it would take way too long (the putting and taking things off and back into shelf), and I’m too lazy =P

Whoa, Chris! Thanks for reminding me about Delicious Library!
I had previously used the first version when it came out but had lost all my data when my hard drive fell as a victim to another life form… or, well, death.
Delicious Library is, without a doubt, a tool that most of us geeks need. If you’re like me, you’re not very organized (I know, bad me, bad, bad me!) but this application helps you at least maintain a list of the things you have, separated by what they are! And, best of all, I can sell my stuff! Sure, i won’t be getting much by selling my lightly used copy of Star Wars: Heir to the Empire, but I can get money from it. Delicious Library tells me how much it costs used and even helps me sell it!
You see the beauty of this? Highly recommended product. I suggest you go out, try it; you’ll love it and buy it, guaranteed!

I never ever thought I needed a home inventory of anything I had. And I’ve been living in the same apartment for years but last summer it was broken into and I had some DVD’s stolen like a Bowie DVD from MTV’s show. And alsa a Billy Idol DVD was stolen. So, after that happened I had to tell my insurance company what I was missing… and at that point I realized an inventory would have been a good thing to have

That does sound like a nice alternative, but here’s what i suggest. First, put all your software, dvds, ect… on their own index card. if we could start with a search utility that would tell me where my car keys are, that would be great.

I keep getting kicked off this site tonight, does anyone know why, or is anyone else having that problem?
It has been great learning from lockergnome all these years Chris, thanks and thanks to everyone behind the scenes here.

so this would be pretty cool if it worked on a PC…which really limits the audience. Writing code that is platform independent is pretty smart these days…

Wow, i Tried this, but it did not work out.. I tried the windows version, it was irritating, I guess you have to have to have a decent webcam? i dont think that the camera was picking it up. I don’t have a big enough inventory to use this software, and buy it, just dvds and a few books, It might be decent to some schools, but not all private schools have Macs, so they would have to use the free software for windows, which I would think would not be as decent as the Mac software. I hope i can figure it out, but thanks for bringing this to the audience..

Haha, I might actually need this. I have so much junk in my storage room. I wonder how it gets all the information… is it stored on the bar code, or in a database on their servers?
Heh, either way one more reason for me to pick up a mac. It’d be great to keep track of what text books I have for school…

It would be pretty sweet and just confirm my OCD diagnosis. I could see it being a useful way to keep track of my dvd and book collection.

Well… I wouldn’t call it delicious, but its pretty awesome. The libra software, although it seems to good to be true! I will probably only get if it goes on sale. My current setup is not big enough to need an inventory list. Everything is where I put it, and is ready for quick access when I need it.

Thanks for showing me this Chris. I am probably going to buy this ASAP, and it gave me thoughts of what it would be like to own a library. This is some of the coolest software I have seen in a while, and it would really help me. (Getting tired of having to remember who owes me money.)

I need this, badly. Every time I lend something to a friend, they just take it forever, and I have to get my mom to get the principle.
Anyway, I recommend this too, because a lot of my friends use it also.

As soon as I can get a Mac I will definitely be using this. I always wanted a place for all my media, and a bookshelf never would suffice! Thanks for the post Chris!
