You should never send sensitive personal information using email, regardless of what network you're using. For added security you should enable SSL encryption for POP3, IMAP and SMTP in your email client. Mail.app on iPhone supports SSL for all of these protocols and transfered encrypted IMAP and SMTP settings from my desktop when syncing mail accounts with my Mac. In addition, you should never submit sensitive information to any website unless your using a encrypted (HTTPS) connection, even if you're using a direct DSL or cable modem connection.
