Instant Messenger Virus

Michael Downing emailed me to say that a friend of his had gotten a virus through Windows Live Messenger. He is wondering if Windows Defender can remove it, and is it for stopping viruses… or just spyware?
Windows Defender is just for certain types of Spyware, and it should be your last line of defense, not the first. A bit better bet is Windows Live One Care. Within a few days of this recording, the newest version of this is due out. It starts around $50.00 a year, and is a bit more comprehensive than this last version. Let’s hope it works much better, as well. However, I’m not going to get into the whole “what protection programs should you use?” debate. I’ll turn that over to all of you in just a moment.
Let’s look at a couple of ways you can keep yourself safe from viruses sent through Instant Messenging programs:
- Don’t set your messenging program to automatically accept file transfers. If your friend’s machine is infected (and thus the file they send), you will end up infected by auto-accepting the file.
- Don’t open files without first checking with your friend to make sure they really DID send it. Some types of Malware will cause your messenging program to send out fake links and files without you doing anything.
- Likewise, don’t open a file without first scanning it with your computer protection program.
- You can be infected just as easily by clicking a link… so beware what you click! Most of the MSN virus variants out there will make it seem as though your friend sent you a message. Most of these are along the lines of “Check out my newest pictures!” with a link. Clicking on that link will get your machine infected faster than you can sneeze. So again… check with your friend first to make sure it’s really a link to their pictures.
If you suspect (or know) your computer has malware that you cannot get rid of, why not try registering at one of the free malware help forums out there? There are plenty of reputable ones to choose from, such as GeeksToGo.com, WhatTheTech.com, and of course Lockergnome.com.
So now… it’s your turn. What protection programs do you recommend? We need your best shots for Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware, Anti-Trojan, and even Anti-Rootkit. What firewall do you use? You can leave me a comment, or even send me an email to chris@pirillo.com

hey, why not try NOD32? it’s cheep, it updates almost every day (sometimes more often), it actually checks anything that is running, AND it’s not sluggishing your computer (at least when comparing to Norton AV)

I use Zone Alarm (ZASS) as my primary firewall, anti-virus, anti-spyware, etc. I have installed but not running AdAware ‘07 Pro, Spysweeper, AVG Pro, Spybot S&D, Trojan Hunter, MS malicious software removal for Nov ‘07, VCom’s Fix-It Pro v8. I have a couple others but their not installed, such as Kasperskay v7x Internet Suite and anti-virus. Just yesterday my ZASS caught and quarantined “Win32.Backdoor.Sdbot.cic”. So, I guess I’m covered but some stuff can mostly likely get through especially if I’m not careful about what I click on or surf/navigate to or open up.

I’d like Onecare a lot better if it didn’t automatically block my ports for half of my games.
Mcafee works really well.

My friend had a Windows Live Messenger virus that sent links out to all his friends. The link contained a download to some virus in a MS-DOS file. Luckily, I recognized that it was probably dangerous to download it.
Apparently, this virus is spreading rather rapidly at the moment.

your a tech, thats a laugh, you dont only get a virus for IM’s, you get them from web pages without having to save a exe or pif file to your pc, some can just upload to your Temporary Internet Files, and the page can execute it without you knowing.. Plus depends by what OS you have and Explorer to protect you from being launched.

yer, as chris said, ask your friend if they sent you it, ask them what it is, make sure its a safe format e.g, MP3, WMV, JPEG, GIF, ususally EXE progrmas are a bit suspicious on messenger if they didnt mean to send it toy you, if you still unsure, SCAN YOUR FILE BEFORE YOU OPEN IT!!!!!!
p.s
i use AVG
good info chris

There’s an Msn Virus being sent out that installs to yr Messenger not your hard drive and mas sends links out to people on your list repeatedly to the virus.
Trouble is if you get infected with it, its yr msn account that is infected not your pc.
Quick solve open a new account and warn every one on your old account.

what does the infection actually do to your account.
what is the effect of it?

It’s more of an annoyance than anything else. it just takes your password and signs in randomly on its own repeatedly sending links out to others on its contact list.
Haven’t caught the virus myself but a few on my list have it.

ah, but does it do any maliscious or destructive to your system in the end?
or can it just use your account to send out spam and advertising… etc?

hej guys someone said here that you can just make another emailadres and that it’s solved then.. maybe it is so but is it also good if you just change your password? because someone told that the virus does nothing but searching for you pass en send links time after time..
so is changing your pass effective or not? because my girlfriend has the virus..

I think the amount of instant messenger viruses that are around is sadly increasing; I am constantly seeing more people who’s systems are infected by malware and are sending out links here, there and everywhere – yet the user is oblivious and has no idea as to what is going on.
I think the best piece of advice a person could give would just be to (a) not accept files from people you don’t know, and always ask what the file is before downloading and (b) only click on links if you have been in a prior conversation with the person and not is they send a one off link with a strange URL.
I think the worst IM service for viruses is probably Windows Live; which in my experience is full of viruses, people trying to get into your machine and other things. Although I don’t want to stereotype a WL Messenger user and would say that although there are lots of genuine people out there who use WLM purely for IM purposes there are a minority that like to cause trouble for other uses; usually people who they don’t know.
