Instant Messaging Hell
Remember how you couldn't send emails to your friends who used Eudora, because you were using Pine? That's because it never happened. That shortcoming would never fly, yet we put up with these exact bugaboos on a regular basis. I'm getting real close to dropping all IM activity altogether until the brands get their acts together. That's likely to never happen, because we have huge egos at stake. With a straight face, you can't tell me that THIS emoticon is any better than THAT emoticon. Next, you're going to tell me that I can't use THIS keyboard to type characters onto THAT screen?! Gimme a break – this is getting old, quick. I don't care if Google's Talk is using Jabber – when the rest of them aren't, it doesn't do *ME* or *US* any good. Feh. More over on Lockergnome.

Chris, I am so with you. Yes I feel compelled to try GoogleTalk, but frankly I'm really disappointed that they didn't launch the beta with some kind of connector to at least Y!, AIM, or MSN.
Google talk might look cool, but now I have to find people to use it with. Tsk, tsk.

Maybe the problem is excessive license fee and new fee to upgrade internally and with external users. We must also recognize that lawyers will find a way to pass blame for failure to some source besides themselves if something happens while using IM from a source other than the host.
We must also recognize the issue of one company being held to a higer or lower standard than the IM source or being held hostage to perform some unique ritual to use 'my IM' through your web site and not mine.
