Virtual Linux is like virtual sex. Sure. It’ll get you there, but the trip ain’t nearly as much fun. Hard drives are HUGE these days… and cheap. Install Linux for real. You might just delete that Windows partition one day. ;)

How could booting from Ubuntu Live CD get any easier? If new windows users want to try non-destructive means of installing Linux, that would be my recommendation.
Methinks you’re noodling too much ;)

There’s also Topologilinux, which is a good and well-balanced Linux distro based on Slackware, and can also be installed and then removed from Windows’s Add/Remove Programs applet. Topologilinux might be not as friendly as Ubuntu (I didn’t use Ubuntu for longer that 5 minutes, might be wrong), but also definitely a good installer package.

Topologilinux allows two modes of operation – it can be either booted from the ntldr’s boot menu as a single running OS, or launched from-within Windows using coLinux – then it runs “in a console box”, and also allows graphical user interface via VNC. The best thing about this dual mode (virtual and real) is that the OS and all the files in both cases are exactly the same :). I’m sure this helps avoiding lots of reboots from one OS into another to e.g. transfer files and/or execute some programs from other OS.
