Chris, I am certain you receive countless emails each day from happy Gnomies – you might even receive the odd message from an unhappy Gnomie, but I cannot imagine why or if such a person exists. Over the last few months I have had the pleasure of 'meeting' and befriending hundreds of people from around this world who are proud to say, “I am a Gnomie!” You have a remarkable following of loyal souls.
A few months ago, I wrote you another email to tell you about a new website on the 'Net – Ask-It-Here.com. To be honest, I had no idea you would publish my email – so you can imagine my delight when one morning I opened my Lockergnome newsletter and discovered my name, Ask-It-Here's URL, and my words! As I sat there reading my own message that morning I thought, 'Wait till I tell John!' – who happens to be the owner of AIH.
But, as any loyal Gnomie will do, I finished reading your newsletter first – plenty of time to brag to John later. “This might even generate a few new members,” was my thought as I finally logged onto AIH that morning. Now, you must keep in mind that Before Lockergnome, or BT as I call it, Ask-it-here.com had a solid membership of around 400 people. Actually pretty good for a new site.
By 1 PM that day our member numbers had risen to over 1000 new registrants. And the numbers were rising every two to three minutes. The membership increased steadily for days – final count one week after your newsletter was just under 3000 new members. 3000! In return, many AIH members who were unaware of Lockergnome signed up for your daily newsletters. In way of a thank-you, I was given my own 'village' on the site – I call it Grey's North Country and it has a distinctly Canadian atmosphere right down to the virtual kitchen parties… but I digress…
We have managed to keep a respectable amount of Gnomies and they have settled into daily life on AIH nicely. Many have said that they came to check out the site because Chris Pirillo suggested they do so, expecting just another Q&A site but stayed because they discovered quickly that AIH was so much more. Others have said they came for the Q&As but stayed for the community on the site.
So, Chris Pirillo, this email is a thank-you to you for mentioning AIH in your newsletter and to your readers who came, stayed and are now valuable members of our ever-growing community.
This is what I live for. This is what makes the struggle worthwhile. This is why I love the Internet. This is why I will never stop publishing electronically. This is what one person has the power to do. This is why I always take the time to look when I'm asked. This is my life. This is my legacy. This has always been my dream.
