In The Car
Lunch first. Long drive to LA next. I'm rifling through our collection of compact discs, searching for the perfect set of road tunes to take with me. Yanni! John Tesh! Yoko Ono! I don't own any of these! Veronica is suggesting that I should take the 101 south, while Jason is steering me to the 5 - which is a faster route, but far less scenic. Ya know what? I've had my fill of boring journeys. While the trip may take another hour or two, I'd just as soon be awake for most all of it.

Everyone has told me 5 is faster….take that that route…way less traffic.

Scenic is always better even if it takes a while longer…the being awake part is far more important than speed; because you'll never make it there and back alive if you're sleep-driving.

On 101 the traffic picks up at Santa Barbara into Los Angeles. On the way down stop in Paso Robles.

There is nothing in the world that matches the drive from San Francisco to LA on the 101.
Make sure you take the exit to PCH (Highway 1) down through Malibu.

If you come across 95 do not take it. It is on the wrong coast.

I prefer 5 when travelling in a group, and almost always early early morning or late late night. Mid-day drive by yourself? Take the 101. It's much more interesting, and some great coastal views!

Couldn't agree more except that the 101 to LA from here is 12 hours, but the 5 is 8. I took the scenic route once and did enjoy it but was just too long.

When i take the 101 i make it even faster than if i take the 5 …. Lance thinks were talking about taking PCH down … PCH takes 12 hours …. the 101 takes 5 hours the way i drive … Chris is making a BIG BORING boo-boo! But it's HIM that has to suffer .. not me!

and JASON should've kept his “trap” shut … cause Chris would be having a nice drive south right now … i'd be REALLY mad at Jason, except it's his birthday tomorrow, so i'll let him off the hook!

I would like to mentioned the numerous speed limit changes on the 101. One minute the speed limit is 70, the next it's 50. You would be wary to not see CHP waiting for you doing 85 through a 50 mph zone. Yes, the trees are nice and all on the 101, it's all a blur to me when I'm doing 100+mph.
And Veronica, I can guarantee that your 5 hrs is much longer no matter how well you drive. :P

On my drive down to Des Moines (5+ hours) I took a book on tape. It was great, really made the time fly.

how long does it take to drive from Monterey to LA via Hwy 1? Any estimates for any portion of that trip?
