Chris, if you are booking hotel reservations for Italy or Europe in general google “charming hotels in Venice, Rome, …., Italy or whatever city/country et al, charming being the key word and you will find ususual villa’s or more that are very affordable, often less than the hotels that are not 4 star (NEVER book anything less than 4 star in Europe it will barely be up to a three star in US). We once had a room hubby’s feet could touch the water closet, twas no bigger than a closet (granted hemight be a little taller than you and I but still) If you are traveling by train in Europe take two smaller suitcases NOT a large one – they are tough to get on and off fast, (God forbid you have to put in overhead bins midway the train as they tarry not at these stops) NEVER allow anyone to help you watch or move your luggage at train stations, many do and never see it again. They gypsys are alive and still working the streets, pay attention to what is happening around you, how you carry your (well Ponzi’s)purse – you get the drift. They are very skilled and use children as lures. Just be alert and all will be fine.

Only exchange travelers checks (presuming you are taking these) any place like street kioske – go into the bank. Counterfeit bills do happen. I can assure you we were held up by the Vatican police or at least hubby was – we have the laughs and pictures to prove it. – I cashed t checks at street kioske and the head of security at Vatican gave me pointers, lol.
