After NUMEROUS warnings against eating or drinking near my laptop, either my son or my wife ( my wife took the blame, but I think it was my son ) spilled milk on it. Most of my keyboard is now useless and the computer freezes when booting up. Drinking anything near a laptop is asking for trouble, especially after being told so. Don't do it!

I like to eat and drink when computing at home.
I sit or recline in my lazyboy, and spilling on the computer is never an issue - as I use a cordless keyboard and trackball, and my computers are not in harms way.

Agreed. Liquids are best kept away from computers. Accidents happen.

You WERE lucky! My coffee spill took place on my Dell laptop. Even after immediately flipping the unit over to reverse the spillage, a handful of my keys no longer worked. Fortunately, I was able to find (on the internet, where else!) instructions to remove and clean the keys, which eventually resolved the problem. Now I only use sippy cups at the computer!

1. That's why it's safer to drink vodka around computers--you can just let it evaporate after a spill.

2. At least it was Peet's. If it had been Starbucks, there's no *way* it could be considered an act of God.

Noooooo.... Petes Coffee?!?!? I wouldn't be upset if it was Starbucks, or some other less worthy coffee. Then again I would probably be upset you were drinking that kind of beverage, so either way... it sucks.

I have an "L" shape desk. and put my Peet's coffee on the other side of the desk, for just this reason.

BTW: Are you a Peetnik? Hope you are, but it you are not you can get a free Peets tumbler mug if you become one. Cool! I know mugs are better, but Coffee-less CPU's are also good :)

Hi chris,

I think the last two comments were a little harsh. this just happened in my office and it was a considered a disaster by my associate. It did break the computer but we were able to transfer her hardward onto a new competer.

how about this for a solution, how about Microsoft make a waterproof computer! Instead of flushing all thier money down the toilets with computer toilet seats which they showcased at the CES show.

Rather than do without my caffeine (or other liquid refreshment) get beverage containers with lids. I use a travel mug at my desk and, even though I tend to be the clumsier than thou person in my environment, it has saved me many heartaches. It's not foolproof, but it does give the average klutz an edge in the spill arena.

Hi Chris,
Sorry about the accident..........
Another advantage of espresso.....not only is there a lot less liquid brew, but usually you drink it quickly, in about three sips and then go on about your business. no comfort cup immediately at hand to possibly "rain on an otherwise good parade" or flood a PC desk, etc., etc., etc.
Let's hear it for espresso!
Cheers'
