I Have 10 Cavities

Yes, you read that right. I went to the Dentist last week, and found out that I have ten cavities. In light of that, here are some tips to keep your teeth healthy from my friend, Dr. Greg Birch.
- Use a new sharp toothbrush, and use it well. The sharpness of the nylon bristles matter much more than gimmicks, and technique is important. Use the modified bass technique, and a SOFT brush. What matters is the newness of the bristles, not the stiffness of them, most brushes are dull after 3 months. Wash it in the dishwasher a couple of times a month to disinfect it (or after you have a cold etc.)
- Loop your floss. Tie your floss in a 4-5 inch loop, work your way around the loop (for most people this is easier than wrapping around fingers). This trick works great for kids, and the elderly, and for pretty much everyone else. Floss aids like The Reach are excellent too.
- Use fluoridated toothpaste. The concentration of fluoride in toothpaste is nominal, it takes a certain concentration on the surfaces of teeth to kill bacteria and strengthen teeth. Crest is the only PROVEN anti-cavity toothpaste, but all other brands with the same concentration work just as well. In areas where the water is fluoridated it doesn’t matter as much, but if you are drinking bottled water it does. The bottled water trend in many cities has cavity rates going up.
- ChewXxylitol gum. Xylitol sugar slows bacterial acid production, and stimulates salivary flow (spit has good stuff in it for your teeth, washing them, and killing bacteria) Chew Trident (with xylitol) , or spray after fructose sodas, chocolates, or other sweets to decrease acid levels in your mouth.
- Brush or scrape your tongue. This is perhaps the most neglected area of the mouth. After brushing and flossing, the slimy fungus on your tongue just plants itself back on your teeth. Tongue cleaners are everywhere, yes they gag but do the best you can. It will freshen breath, and keep your mouth healthy.

Use SPRY. It is a mouth rinse. It help prevent cavities and plaque. It also contains xylitol.

Thanks a lot Chris. I’m taking my dental hygene more seriously now. I even put my retainer in as soon as you recorded this video.
Also a good tip is to brush your gums as well as your teeth. It gives you sturdy gums and ensures you get the base of your teeth

chris at least you didn’t have multiply teeth pulled out on one visit. I floss now. I use those floss picks their easier to hold and manuver in the mouth. Just make sure to rinse it in running hot water after each tooth.

I used to get a lot of cavities. I started low carbing four years ago and haven’t had a cavity since. Maybe you should think about returning to a low carb way of eating.

Get some Listerine and gargle at night. If it’s too much then try hydrogen peroxide half and half with water. Either way it gets rid of some plaque…
I haven’t got any cavities for three years. Cheer up, it could be Halloween–most people get more cavities in October than in any other month.

yeah i think people should go to the dentist more often because if they find out sooner than later the problems they have it will save them alot less money and probably alot less pain and keep them from needing false teeth in the future.

My dentist back in the states told me that if I had anything sugary, that a quick rinse would suffice until I could brush my teeth and floss and such.

The main culprit is sugar, not the natural sugar naturally present in fruits and vegetables but refined white sugar and all other forms of refined sugar such as corn syrup. The simple fact is, if you get some refined sugar on your teeth and don’t clean it off immediately, then you have the microscopic beginnings of cavities already working. Apply refined sugar constantly, every day, for a long period of time, and you have 10 big cavities, or a hundred. Food processing companies put refined sugar into just about everything nowadays, for two reasons, one to make it tasty and addictive, and two because sugar is a pretty good preservative and the packaged food keeps longer. Add to that the coffee with sugar habit, and the soda pop habit, and the snacking on sugary snacks habit, and frankly your teeth haven’t got a chance. Why don’t dentists speak of this? Well, for one reason, Mercedes cars and yachts don’t come cheap, and secondly, food processors have paid big bucks to get university studies purporting to show that refined sugar is not harmful. (Isn’t that dishonest? answer: Yes!)

The main culprit is ACID, not sugars. Bacteria process most sugars (but not xylitol) to produce acids. Soft, sport, and energy drinks feed bacteria and have a low pH already, so that’s a double-whammy.
Brushing and flossing and hygiene visits are 90% about helping you fight bacteria from PERIODONTAL DISEASE, not cavities. We can help with your cavities, but perio disease is extremely difficult and costly to manage. CAVITIES (especially for people older than 20 years) are mainly from diet, especially if you are minimally competent at brushing.
What most people don’t understand is how intricate the crypts are in the tops of people’s teeth. They are so constricted that not even the best toothbrush bristle can get in there…but bacteria can. They spit out acids over time and create big ol’ cavities below the initial surface. So, it is entirely possible for an honest dentist to find 10 teeth with acidic breakdown, especially if someone hasn’t seen a dentist who is AWARE of this issue.
Poke-poke-poke-does-it-stick catches these cavities AFTER the roof has collapsed. Wouldn’t you want to fix a roof leak before the kitchen has a “sunroof”? Radiographs (xrays) are great at detecting issues between the teeth, but don’t help us in the middle of the tooth.
The only way to deal with these crypts is to seal them off BEFORE bacteria get there. If the tooth has been in the mouth more than 6 months, you are better off NOT sealing it and addressing the cavities when it is first detected. My office has a DiagnoDent laser cavity detector which really helps patients see that I’m not making this stuff up! I also show copious gorgeous digital photos of these surfaces so patients know I’m not taking them for a ride.
There are some dentists who are in such a hurry that they don’t explain this stuff to you. Here’s a tip about dentistry: we really don’t make much money unless we are doing CROWNS, not fillings and radiographic images. If a dentist really wants to make money, he’ll shut up and let Chris’ 10 lesions brew until he can recommend 10 CROWNS.
Crowns are great, but only for teeth that are in such deep you-know-what, that only a tooth-looking-thimble will prevent it from exploding when you bite anything firmer than a banana.
Yes, there are unethical dentists out there, but in all likelihood the guy is right and Chris will save mucho dinero by addressing these problems BEFORE the roof caves in.
OK, I just watched that “smoking tooth” video and be VERY skeptical of the info in this video. Mercury in amalgams is bound and the main release of vapor happens when the restoration is removed with the dental handpiece (all fillngs, roofs, tires, etc fail). What does this vapor CAUSE? (let’s be pragmatic) The video only claims that “surely” this is toxic, but there is no sufficient evidence of that - anywhere. The tooth preparation for amalgam fillings IS more aggressive, but what about “the children” (This is a classic scare tactic). I could go on, but there are three main points about this:
1) Dentists get a higher fee from ins companies to do composite restorations. If we can generate more revenue from these, wouldn’t the ADA’s journal have article after article urging people to replace those amalgams with composites?
2) ALL FILLINGS FAIL - In fact, the edges of composite restorations leak WAY before amalgams, so the claim that amalgam will send you on a spiral of high cost crowns, “root canals” (that’s like saying “knees”), and extractions is a silly one. Composite restorations have to be replaced with bigger, bigger, bigger ones, so crowns and other desperate measures are probably coming sooner with a series of composites.
3) Composites restorations, the alternative to amalgams, contain Bis-GMA, which mimicked estrogen in lab rats. I wonder if that could have a toxic effect on the body long term?????
Both amalgams and composites are super ways to help you fight off bacteria. We’ll probably be phasing out amalgam mainly because of the inability to safely dispose of it to the environment.
Beware of that anit-bruxism scheme, too. Radiographs don’t confirm that “the bite is aligned”. That guy doesn’t have a clue about harmonious centric jaw relations…. I could go on for days about that ad…but I digress.

natural cure for cavities: eat a raw-egg fruit smoothie every day. my recipe is 1 orange, 1 raw egg, 1 packet of stevia to sweeten it. sometimes i add plain yogurt. try 1 or 2 of these a day for a month and your tooth pain will be gone, and your cavities will eventually heal up for good. you’ll also want to avoid flouride altogether, I use plain baking soda instead of toothpaste, it works better and doesn’t screw up your teeth like flouride.
