I can envision national security wanting facial recognition / facial inventory to match up against. I also fancy that as identity theft increases, the average person will be increasingly agreeable to having a biometric on-file for more reliable authentication.

Until this Orwellian future arrives, it’s probably a good idea to consider that if you connect to the Internet, regardless of how well you’re protected by a firewall, someone will likely be able to finagle their way into accessing your drive’s contents. Encryption is a good way to increase the time it’ll take for them to get to your data. TrueCrypt is another free encryption program see http://www.truecrypt.org.

Some firewalls have a function that will stop all Internet access when your keyboard has been idle for 20 minutes. If you’re not using the Internet, and if you often leave your computer on overnight, turn on this idle-time feature.

As a final thought, at some point you’ll be using your computer and your monitor and keyboard will be working with non-encrypted keystrokes and character representation on your monitor. Consider your surroundings. Better yet, go to a Brookstone or Sharper Image and use a pair of their binoculars to check on one of their lap-tops.

try filling out an employment application online - you can't even get to the applicaiton without giving your social security number first. So tons of folks out there have their SS numbers and their names out there simply because they're trying to find work. In that situation who cares if your personal computer is encrypted.
