Encryption is a good way to increase the time it’ll take for them to get to your data. TrueCrypt is another free encryption program see http://www.truecrypt.org. Some firewalls have a function that will stop all Internet access when your keyboard has been idle for 20 minutes. If you’re not using the Internet, and if you often leave your computer on overnight, turn on this idle-time feature. As a final thought, at some point you’ll be using your computer and your monitor and keyboard will be working with non-encrypted keystrokes and character representation on your monitor. Consider your surroundings. Better yet, go to a Brookstone or Sharper Image and use a pair of their binoculars to check on one of their lap-tops. So tons of folks out there have their SS numbers and their names out there simply because they're trying to find work.
