How to Watch a Show

During the holiday season, many of us will be going to see a show. Whether it’s a movie at the cinema, or a live performance in a theater, here are some excellent tips to make the evening more enjoyable for everyone.
- Get there thirty to forty-five minutes before it starts. This is important, for concerts and theatrical performance they “open the house”. That means the doors are opened to allow the audience to find their seats and get all manner of talking out of the way before the show begins. It is also distracting to stage actors to have people attempt to find seats while they are trying to preform.
- Make reservations. This mainly applies for theatrical shows and symphonic concerts. You may ask why, but the answer is simple. If you fail to reserve a ticket, then there is a chance the show will sell out. If it is a popular show, or a show that parents will want to children to see, there is a good chance that the show will sell out. Some places will call you back to confirm the reservation. Also, if you realize that you cannot make the reservation, then call the box office and tell them ASAP. That way, the box office can open those seats up to other people. If you fail to reserve tickets, then do not blame the people working the box office. It is not their fault that you were idiotic and not make a reservation.
- DO NOT TALK during the show. You may think your comment is funny, but the people around you will not. In a movie, it’s not as bad as a play. Also, just because you think the lead actor of the show is gay, you may not want to say this because you don’t know if the people in front of you are friends of the actor or not.
- Do not bring children under the age of four or five to see a show. Yes, it may be a good show for them to see, but if they end up to cry or be fussy, you can bet that the actors and the other audience members will be unhappy and distracted. If it gets too bad, you may be asked to leave. If you take a child to a show, request to get isle seats. This way, if the little bundle of joy is fussing, you can quietly get up and take the child out to the lobby and attempt to calm him or her down.
- TURN OFF YOUR WIRELESS “CELL” PHONE! This is one, that even reminded by the director before hand, people tend to forget. Nothing like watching a showing of the musical Shenandoah, and hearing someones ringtone. Not only did the phone ring not fit the show, it also gained the ire of the actors on stage, and the audience members, not to mention the technical crew.
- DO NOT TAKE PICTURES! The flash photography could bind the actor on stage, or it could also lead to the actor being injured and a lawsuit for you. It’s best to leave the camera at home. Also, if you are at a movie, and take out a camera, you could be reported as attempting to pirate the movie. This could land you in hot water with the MPAA, as well as in extreme cases, lead to jail time.

I couldn’t help but laugh at the one when you take a picture of someone on stage. I could just see it, an actor at the edge of the stage, u take a pic with the flash on, the actor spins around can falls off the stage XD. But like you said…. lawsuit….

Chris, the part of not thinking the actor is “weird” came from December 7th.
One of my friends was George Bailey in “It’s a Wonderful Life”. I was there, right in front of some teenage highschoolers, who honstly thought Daniel was “weird”. This was infront of another of his friends who drive five hours to see him. She was about to turn around and tell those girls to Shut up, that she didn’t drive five hours to see her boyfriend perform (they are not really dating). I mean I would have laughed hard at that.
Also, all of those tips, I have witnessed first and second hand. As an actor and tec, I’ve had plenty of mobile devices ring and flash photos taken as well. Sadly, these people just do not realize that they are doing anything wrong.
Also, getting to a play too early is not too bad. Normally you just have to sit out in the lobby till they open the house. Heh, I should have added this as another bonus tip, but I’m adding it more as a joke here.
If You see the sound technican control board, do not mess with the settings at intermission if the control board are located near the auidence. It may be funny at that time, but when the show starts back you might have a loud squeel that will annoy yourself.

What really irks me is those people with the annoying laughs. I also can’t stand people who get up like 50 times, jeez sit at the end of the aisle! Anyway, good post.

I work in theater as a tech, and you would be surprised how ignored all of these things are…
Just an addendum: As a person in technical theater, please, please, PLEASE recognize good technical work. The actors will often give recognition to the sound/lighting/projection booth during curtain call. This isn’t because you’re a great audience, it’s to say, “Hey, there are a group of people who busted their butts just as much as any actor!”
I’ve worked on shows where I put in over 300 hours in five weeks. Being on the crew takes just as much dedication as any actor, and just because you may not notice what they do, or what they have done to make that show happen doesn’t mean they don’t exist once the curtain goes up
Please, the next time you go to a show, give that standing ovation not only for the actors, but for the techies as well.

I thought these were some great tips. I especially like the one about the children. I can relate to that one because I just had my first daughter. And every where I go I’m constantly worried about what is the kid going to do. I can’t stand going anywhere because I don’t want to be the guy with the noisy baby LOL!
And the cellphone tip is an obvious one but you know as well as i do how much that gets ignored. They need to install some cell phone jammers in the theaters for plays and movies. Welp E U Later.

Another comment: Do not go to a show when you are sick. Those who are sitting near you will not appreciate getting a cold, flu, or other “bug” from you. Also, take cough drops with you even if you’re not sick. Indoor theaters and performing venues can often be very dry inside. The preformers and the rest of the audience will not be thrilled to hear you coughing. And for the ladies (and those men who wear cologne), go very easy on fragrance, maybe not wear it at all. Those who use them often don’t realize how much they are using. There are many healthy-looking people who have problems with fragrances (myself among them) who literally cannot breathe when somebody nearby is using fragrances. In a reserved seating situation, these people either have to possibly aggravate their asthma or leave the performance entirely. And cell phones: so rude. We went to a classical piano solo concert and some idiot let his cell phone ring during a quiet passage. The pianist was so involved in her music that she didn’t notice but all 900+ people in the auditorium did. This in spite of the fact that the management made an announcement telling people to turn off cell phones, pagesrs and cameras.
