Speed aside, is there any quality compromise between USB, Firewire 400 and Firewire 800?

question. I have bought a Seagate FreeAgent Go Pro external hard drive and didn't realize to use the port I would have to have 800 firewire on my MAC computer. I have MACBOOK white and it only has 400 firewire. The dock is 800 firewire. I know there has to be some kind of adapter to use. Do I use 400-800 or 800-400? The Go Pro came with several different cables so I really don't want to have another cable to carry around. Thanks

Good suggestion. I'm always into ways to save a little money and a little hassle. I have enough wiring as it is! The back of my desktop looks like the business end of a Jellyfish!

Hello,

I just wanted to comment that I have a couple of the Sonnet FireWire 400-to-800 Adapters and they work quite well.

Regards,

USB won in some regards. Firewire is still better for a number of purposes, such as pulling video off many DV. However, I will certainly concede that for most purposes, usb is more desirable.

I'm a little surprised that Apple doesn't include (or at least sell) an adapter. Seems like a no brainer.

It's a better solution than a cable for sure. However, I'm guessing you'll still yield 400 speed instead of 800 speed.
