How to Use a Camcorder as a Webcam

http://live.pirillo.com/ – There are many ways to stream video on the Internet, but a crucial component is the video camera that you use. I can either be a webcam, built specifically for capturing video and displaying it on your computer, or a camcorder. The question is, then, how do you stream video from your DV camcorder?

There are several pieces of software you can try which will allow you to stream video form your camcorder.

>ActiveWebcam might be overkill because it’s mainly for security and surveillance, but you can use it to stream video from your camcorder:

Active WebCam captures images up to 30 frames per second from any video device including USB, analog cameras, TV-boards, camcorders, and from network IP cameras.

The program performs simultaneous recording and broadcasting from unlimited number of cameras.

WebcamDV allows you to have "the best quality webcam in the world:"

If you own a DV camcorder, or are about to buy one, wouldn’t it be cool if you could use all its features by making it the world’s best web cam? WebCamDV is a utility which runs in conjunction with your webcam software application. It lets your digital video camera with all its expensive features, act like a webcam! Imagine, a webcam with 600X zoom, auto focus, stereo sound, auto stabilizing, night vision, high quality optics, and more, depending on your camcorder.

DVDriver lets you iuse your camcorder as if it were a regular webcam:

DVdriver is a software tool that lets you use your camcorder with any software that works with webcams. It works by fooling Windows into thinking that your camcorder is just an ordinary USB webcam.

Use your camcorder with the full range of webcam software available today. Just plug your camcorder into your PC’s Firewire port, run DVdriver and start the software you want to use.

Hi there,

Do you have any advice on the actual camcorder to use? We’ve purchased a piece of software that allows you to record a lecture with the slides, audio, and video synchronised. This requires the audio and video to be streaming live to the computer. I’ve run a test with a regular webcam and microphone and it works really well. What we want now though is to put a high-quality camera at the back of a classroom to do a proper recording. I’m trying to find a good camcorder that will stream at 640×480 and at least 15fps but I’m not having much luck. Have you come across anything that will do this?

Thanks,

Ben.

But is there software that is cheaper or better yet, for free? I’m part of the elite millions who’s income is little. And I mean little! Having the wrong contacts in tech is who I have all this to thank for. hahaha (insert evil, demented laugh here)

Hey, great article. I do have one question for you. Do you know of any software that is compatable with macs? This is exactly what I’m looking for… only i’m not on a pc. Thanks!

I tried both WebCamDV and DVDriver on Ustream.TV and neither seems to work. I get an active video window on my PC but nothing on Ustream.TV.

What software do you use there?

Thanks-

I need to do this! I have a very old camcorder that is usb-capable and I have actually wanted my very own live feed. “www.justin.tv/mangospork” I made it, but I haven’t done this yet. Soon. Soon!

Great Chris

Hey, great post. I use my samsung camcorder to stream via ustream.tv. It works great!! Is there a way I can keep the camcorder from shutting off? I’ve taken out the battery and have it plugged in to 110, thinking this would disable power saving feature. Looked in the menus but find no place to disable this. I appreciate anything you have to help me.!

embedded streaming media broken.
Try testing your web site with firefox.

Why limit yourself when you don’t have to.
