How to turn Your iPhone into a Video Recorder

I’m live streaming from my iPhone once again! The latency isn’t bad at all. You know what this means, don’t you? It means I can get up and be on the move without being tethered to a laptop or desktop. At least, when you’re able to download and install this app for the iPhone – which isn’t quite available (yet).
You might remember a few months ago when I did a review of the QIK app for streaming on the iPhone. Well – this isn’t it! This is Ustream’s app! You can use this new app to stream live from your iPhone or iPod Touch as long as you have a wifi connection. The audio is solid, and the picture quality is pretty good.
So, how do you turn your iPhone into a video recorder? Easy:
- Download and install this app from the iTunes app store.
- Sign up for a Ustream account (free).
- Press the Broadcast button.
Unfortunately, Apple hasn’t allowed them to release the app yet – but it should be coming soon!
For this video, I carried my iPhone into my bedroom with me, and stretched out on the bed. You can do pretty much anything with your own stream (within reason). Although this app works well for the most part, there are some bugs, as you would expect. For instance, I cannot switch over to my regular live video feed with any degree of ease. People get stuck in limbo, and aren’t sure what they’re watching. I may have to set up a separate mobile feed for this until Ustream figures out a way to make this work a bit better.
Walking back into my office didn’t go as smoothly as I planned. If you have an iPhone and a live video stream – you can travel! Ustream is a live video community for everyone. Anyone with a computer, an Internet connection and a web cam can set up their own channel and broadcast live.

I love the application that allows you to chat and watch ustream shows. I wish the iPod Touch had a camera so I could stream from it. That is one of the big things I wish the iPod Touch had. I do however love the Fring app that allows me to hook up a headset and talk on skype through my iPod Touch.

The iPod touch doesn’t have a camer or mic, so this is not an option, though the new ustream app works nicely on the touch for viewing live streams.

Is this an upgrade to the app in the iTunes store?

Wait, I just downloaded the uStream app yesterday and it’s view only. You can’t stream from it. Is this another one of those “look at me I get awesome apps that you don’t” like Qik? I’m not a fan of people reviewing things, making it sound like anyone can get it, only to find out I can’t get it.

How are you supposed to download it from iTunes if it isn’t available yet?

I downloaded the app, but I don’t see an option to broadcast. Is this something ustream enabled to chris or is this something anyone can do?

Exactly, Chris. What you are doing on here when you show off apps like this is in effect false advertising. You keep advertising shit like this that we all can supposedly download, when in reality we can’t and won’t be able to for a while. Remmeber Qik?? Yeah, you said it would be on the app store soon? Well, where is it? You should NOT review apps for the iPhone or iPod Touch that aren’t released yet because it makes people think things are different than what they are. If you want to review things that aren’t out yet, then stick to hardware and maybe other types of software. Leave the iPhone and iPod Touch stuff alone.

I remember about half a year ago Kevin Rose was showing off a streaming video app for Qik. It’s 2009 and Qik still hasn’t released their app to the public. I don’t see a link to the Ustream app and doubt it will ever be available.
I suspect this is might be a link bait tactic? And the only way this would work is with an iPhone that has been jailbroken.
The iPhone will never see streaming video and never see flash.

Any idea why such apps haven’t been allowed onto the appstore yet? Something lik Qik or ustream would seem to be killer apps for the iphone.
